Research is showing, and to be honest most parents will have guessed, that children are consuming more content on social media platforms like TikTok and this extends to seeking out contraceptive advice. Young people report it's easier to access, feels much more personal to them and their lives, and is based on real life experiences of content creators. However we know not all information is accurate and can exaggerate or generalise risk. Encouraging young people to ask themselves questions like "Is the content sponsored?", "Does the creator have medical knowledge and expertise?" and "Is content balanced?" can help them separate fact from fiction. Finally the good news, family is also a valuable source of info so the more we know the better we can support our children.

The theme for this years Sexual Health week is around the influence of the online world and how this shapes ideas of sexual health and relationships. Whilst online can be a wonderful source of information and support for young people, especially those who gain comfort from online communities, there is a darker side. Open, honest conversations with young people can help them navigate around the pitfalls that exist and ensure they feel heard and more able to build positive relationships with people off-line as well.

Soap storylines can do more than entertain—they can spark real conversations.

The current Coronation Street plot highlighting domestic abuse in a same-sex relationship is powerful and important. It brings visibility to an issue too often overlooked, while reminding us why representation matters.

LEVEL is a new, community-informed trial programme supporting LGBTQ+ people who are causing harm in intimate relationships. We know that drama can start the conversation—but support and change need to follow. That’s what our programme is here for.

Read our latest blog on why this matters and how soaps can help shine a light on LGBTQ+ domestic abuse: levelchange.org.uk/soap-storylines-sparks-conversation
