💜 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - Day 13 💜

Karma Nirvana was established in 1993 as the first UK charity providing support to victims & survivors of honour-based abuse (HBA).

It is now the longest-established charity specialising in providing support for people impacted by HBA.

HBA is not widely recognised as a form of domestic abuse and is often misunderstood or dismissed in the name of ‘culture’ or ‘tradition’ – therefore it remains unhidden, and victims remain without support.

For more information on this topic and the available support please visit https://karmanirvana.org.uk/

Strangulation is the obstruction of the airway and / or blood vessels by external pressure to the neck – it decreases oxygen to the brain.

Non-fatal strangulation (NFS) is when strangulation does not cause death. NFS in an indicator that serious harm or death is likely to occur in the future - in 2022, 25% of domestic homicides involved strangulation as the cause of death.

The signs of NFS can be easily missed – 50% of NFS victims have no visible external injuries to neck or head.

If you or someone you know has recently been a victim of NFS please seek medical treatment – if there is an immediate risk to life call 999.

For more information on strangulation please visit https://ifas.org.uk/
