Recently, someone described me as a 'multi-tool clinician'...why?...because we are whole-person centered and 'multi-talented' at Plus Health Co. What a nice thing to be told!

We don't just look at the part, but at the whole of you. All the time...and we use our wide skillset to get you feeling your best.

Obviously the pic had to be green...but don't worry, we won't be using any blades in clinic or classes! Occasional chisel for stiff backs needed though (joke!) 😁

This week, as part of my ongoing commitment to CPD, I have been sat in clinic with one of the finest spinal surgeons. I have also delivered our 'oh my aching back' presentation (which thankfully, aligned perfectly!).

In my view, it is essential to remain up to date with the latest clinical evidence, research and recommendations, so we continue to offer the very best physiotherapy and pilates service.

It was great to hear him be so pro-physio and pro-exercise (and I'm convinced it's not just because I was sitting in!).

Sometimes, it is just simple advice which makes the biggest difference to people...

Recently, I was assessing a lady with one-sided neck pain. She was/is an empathetic lady who also happened to have a hearing impairment...

I noticed she spoke with her head tilted to one side as she listened to me and I asked her if she knew she did this....she didn't...so I asked her to take notice of this habitual posture and not to do it (along with an up to date hearing check)! Guess what?.... her neck pain went away!

Yesterday, I spoke to a lady I have known for many years. She attends a weekly Plus Pilates class and is 'all in' when it comes to proactively managing her various aches and pains. She told me that the single best advice I ever gave her, was to visualise her chin resting on a shelf as she turned it to the side (rather than lifting her chin as she did so). This simple cue for this simple exercise is the way she effectively manages any flare ups in neck pain. Voila! Again, not complicated. Just good, simple advice which works! That's what we do here

Hmm! What to do what to do! ...the icy path and mud paths. Beware!

We often hear about peoples' fear going out when the ice and snow arrive, and whilst it is right to take caution to a point, unfortunately, our bodies dont thank us for the inactivity...and wintery weather can last many months!

It takes just more than a day of bed rest before changes are seen in the strength, quality and size of our muscles which play such an important part in moving us, supporting our joints and helping us stay active and feeling good.

So, rather than walking directly over ice, step around it slowly and with smaller steps, using safe support from walls/posts etc if needed. Take your time, and avoid routes you know are left unattended (and don't get sun to thaw them out). Consider getting snow grip footwear (like yaktraks) to improve traction on snow and ice. It may also be a good idea to walk with someone, rather than alone, if you feel unconfident.
..alternatively, you need to work hard to stay strong and active at home! There are lots of ways to achieve this ...watch this space for some ideas!
