Do you know about Clare’s Law?

Clare’s Law – officially known as the Domestic Violence Disclosure Scheme (DVDS) – gives you the right to ask the police if your current or ex-partner has a history of violence or abuse.

There are two parts to Clare’s Law:

👩‍🦰 “Right to Ask” – You have a right to ask the police no matter if your enquiry relates to a heterosexual or same-sex relationship, as long as you are aged 16 or older. You also have the right to ask about a partner regardless of your (or your neighbour, friend or family member’s) gender identity, ethnicity, race, religion or other characteristics.

👮 “Right to Know” – This means that if police checks show that your current or ex-partner has a record of violent or abusive behaviour, and they believe you may be at risk, they may decide to proactively share that information with you. If you’re worried that your current or former partner has been abusive or violent in the past, Clare’s Law was created to formally give you the right to find out.

Clare’s Law was introduced in memory of Clare Wood, who was tragically murdered by an abusive partner in 2009. It aims to give people the knowledge and power to make safer choices.

If you’re worried about your relationship, or about someone you care about, you’re not alone.

How can you help WomenCentre? Did you know you can join WomenCentre via our membership?
Membership is a bit like sponsorship. It costs just £15 or £20 for the year (or £2.50 for people on low incomes), and the funds raised from our memberships go directly to supporting the women that access support at our centres.

Every little bit you can give makes a huge difference to the women and their children that we support in our communities!

We appreciate each and every one of our members!
