Cancer death rates in the UK are at their lowest level on record, according to our new data.

Around 250 in every 100,000 people now die from cancer each year – a 29% decrease since mortality rates peaked in 1989.

Cervical cancer has seen one of the biggest improvements across cancer types, with a 75% reduction in death rates over the past 50 years. Death rates for a number of other cancer types, including stomach and testicular cancers, and Hodgkin's lymphoma, have also dropped considerably.

Dr Sam Godfrey, our science engagement lead, says: “These figures represent decades of crucial scientific breakthroughs – from vaccines that prevent cancer to kinder, more targeted treatments.

“Because of this, thousands more people today can make memories, reach milestones and spend precious time with their loved ones."

🌸 Calling Black and South Asian Women Living With Metastatic Breast Cancer 🌸

We’d love to invite you to take part in a friendly, relaxed online or phone interview to share your experiences and support needs. Your voice truly matters, and this research is all about making sure it’s heard.

👩🏽‍⚕️ About the researcher:

Summayah Zafar is a Health Psychology Doctorate student and Cancer Support Worker who is Pakistani Muslim. She is passionate about understanding the real experiences of Black and South Asian women so we can work towards better, more culturally aware support.

🎁 As a thank‑you, you’ll also have the chance to enter a prize draw for a voucher.
