Healthy Futures Calderdale Healthy Futures Calderdale aims to ensure the local public health provision for school-aged children.

We work together and with others to promote good health and wellbeing, prevent ill-health, and protect children and young people from harm. Healthy Futures Calderdale:
· works in settings and communities across Calderdale facilitating activities and events to promote health and wellbeing;

· provides support to schools, such as training, resources and classroom
sessions;

· offers one-to-one support to young people and families, delivered by public health nurses who can provide advice, information and support to access other services. As part of the service we incorporate the school nursing service in Calderdale, provided by Locala Community Partnerships CIC which has a focus on:

“Identifying health needs, managing long and short term conditions in education settings for children and young people aged 5 to 19 years”. Locala's school nursing service in Calderdale works closely with the established school nursing team in Kirklees, which includes two Queens Nurses. The service responds to local need, works with other professionals and supports schools to manage the wellbeing of pupils by:

•Delivering universal health services, improving the lives of all, with proportionally greater resources targeted at the most disadvantaged pupils
•Proactive identification of health needs, individual health assessments and appropriate follow up activity
•Support for pupils with long term and/or short medical conditions and vulnerable groups

December marks Grief Awareness Month, and for many, Christmas can be a challenging time when dealing with the absence of a loved one or adjusting to change. It’s important to know that support is available.

If you’re under 19 and struggling with grief, you can reach out to Childline for free. Call 0800 1111, send an email, or use the 1-2-1 online chat via childline.org.uk 💙.

Here are some helpful ways to manage grief during the festive period:
1️⃣ Talk about how you feel – Opening up can lighten the emotional load.
2️⃣ Share memories – Remembering happy moments can bring comfort.
3️⃣ Do their favourite Christmas activity – Honour their memory in a meaningful way.
4️⃣ Make their favourite food – Cooking their favourite dish can evoke a sense of closeness.
5️⃣ Create a memory box – Store mementos, letters, or items that remind you of them.
6️⃣ Be kind to yourself – Allow yourself to feel emotions without judgment.

No one has to face grief alone. Reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

As the colder weather sets in and heating comes on in our homes, it's an ideal environment for germs and bugs to thrive and spread. If you know someone with a cough, cold, or tummy bug, try to maintain some distance. If avoiding them isn’t possible, the most effective way to help stop the spread is by washing your hands thoroughly.

Here’s how to stay protected:
- Wash your hands properly: Use warm water and soap, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. Focus on areas like between the fingers and under the nails. Visual guides can be helpful, so check out resources on effective handwashing techniques.

- Stay hydrated: Aim for around 2.5 litres of water per day to keep your body functioning well and boost your immune system.

- Seek medical advice if necessary: If symptoms worsen or you’re unsure, consult a healthcare professional.

Let’s all do our part to stay healthy and protect one another this season!
