On the last Sunday of the month, 30th, learn about Chaos in Shelf with Ben Stables. Whilst walking along Shelf’s main street learn about a murder, a missionary, Methodists who couldn’t get along amongst other things.

Meet Ben at 1.30 at the entrance to St Michael and All Angels Church (opposite to Lidl) on Halifax Road, Shelf. HX3 7RJ. The walk is not suitable for mobility scooters. Dogs on leads are welcome.

The following Sunday, December, on 7th, Anne Kirker will be exploring our Victorian heritage. We are so fortunate that so much of our Victorian heritage has survived. Anne will take you round some of these buildings explaining who was involved in them being built and the civic pride embodied in these buildings.

Meet Anne at 1.30 at the top corner of Northgate House by the Wade Street entrance to the new bus station which itself retains some of the town’s old buildings. HX1 1UR. The walk is suitable for mobility scooters. Dogs on short leads are welcome. Images in Halifax, Calderdale Council & Calderdale Companion.

Details are in the printed version of our winter programme which is available at our usual outlets and the on-line version is available using this link:

Welcome to our winter programme! The first thing to note is that our walks now start at 1.30pm as it begins to get dark earlier.

On 2nd November, our walk is ‘23 women, 2 ghosts and a ducking stool’ with David Glover. A stroll round Halifax with stories about an Italian organ-player, Lily Fogg, Monica Clay, Elsie Whitely, Helena Whitbread and others. And, at the end, a cruel punishment for females only. The walk is suitable for well behaved dogs on leads. The walk is on footpaths, so suitable for mobility scooters.

Meet David at 1.30 at the Halifax Cenotaph, lower car park off King Street. HX1 1SR.

Two weeks later, on Sunday 16th November David Cant will be taking you round part of Sowerby Bridge looking at transport links in the town. Turnpikes, canals and railways crossing the Pennines and contributing to the development of the town.

Meet David outside the railway station refreshment rooms, at 1.30, HX6 3AB. The walk is suitable for dogs on leads. It is not suitable for mobility scooters.

On Sunday 12th, take a walk round part of the township of Skircoat on a new walk with Anne Kirker. It stretches from Manor Heath to Free School Lane and shows how Halifax expanded in this direction in the later 19th century. On Sunday, 5th October David Glover is leading a walk around Halifax town centre in search of lost churches and chapels. Some disappeared many years ago, some more recently. Who paid for Square Church spire - aren’t we fortunate that it survived? Who were the Unitarians? Learn about Methodist and Baptist Chapels, the Salvation Army and Anne Lister’s ‘new church’. The walk is suitable for mobility scooters. Dogs on short leads.

Meet David at 2pm at Square Road below Central Library steps, HX1 1QG.

Anne Kirker has a new walk around Heath, Skircoat on Sunday 12th and Anne Mealia finishes our summer programme looking at some famous people of Todmorden - 26th October.

The group photograph shows walkers on Mary Twentyman’s new walk through parts of Norwood Green.

On Sunday 28th Mary Twentyman will be looking round parts of Norwood Green exploring coal mining in the area. It is difficult to believe that it was once a humble pit village. This is a new walk entitled Coke, Coal and Corves.

Meet Mary at 2pm at the War Memorial at Village Street, Norwood Green, HX3 8QD.
You will need £4 in cash, please.

We then have 3 walks in October. On 5th, David Glover is looking for some lost churches and chapels in Halifax. A week later, Anne Kirker has a new walk around the Heath at Skircoat and finally for our summer programme, Anne Mealia will be introducing you to some Todmorden folk.

The winter programme is becoming available in the usual places such as libraries and will be on our website within a few days.

Well done to the 21 brave souls who got soaked at the start of the Hove Edge walk. We were fortunate that it stopped raining soon into the walk.

Purely by chance our two September meetings feature - if only briefly - corves. The image of this form of transport is taken from Beecham & Bowers ‘A History of Northowram’.

On 7th September, Ian Philp has a walk round the village of Hove Edge. It features a former private railway, stone mines and quarries, WW2 sites and a General buried in Westminster Abbey. Dogs on leads. There is a short narrow footpath with some undergrowth early on so leg covering might be advisable.

Meet Ian outside the Dusty Miller on A644, HD6 2PB. Please do not use the pub’s carpark unless you are having Sunday roast first!

I'm looking forward to taking walkers on my 3hr ramble on Midgley Moor tomorrow! Remember to wear suitable footwear for moorland terrain please. It's forecast high UV and high pollen, so sunscreen recommended as there's no shelter, and maybe hay fever pill if you might be affected by heather pollen. Bit warm too, at 26 degrees. Not too bad, all told! See you 2pm at the Hare & Hounds x-roads.
