💜 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - Day 16 💜

Today is Human Rights Day and marks the end of the 2025 16 Days of Activism.

Human Rights Day reminds us that we all have the right to live free from harm or abuse, and we all need to stand up for our own rights and those of others.

Domestic abuse and gender-based violence are examples of basic human right being infringed upon and we hope by sharing resources over the past weeks that have been informed on the effects of abuse alongside the support that is available.

💜 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - Day 15 💜
Did you know we have a dedicated domestic abuse worker at Calderdale Recovery Steps?

Whist we are not a domestic abuse service; we recognise the difficulty that those struggling with substance use may face if also experiencing domestic abuse.

By having a dedicated domestic abuse worker at Recovery Steps, we aim to appropriately support victims of domestic abuse who are using substances and support them with safety planning, accessing specialist services & advice, or just simply being able to speak with someone about their experience.

Our domestic abuse worker also hosts a regular drop in at The Women Centre in Halifax for women that may wish to learn more about our service, access support, or just learn about drugs & alcohol in general.

Our Women Centre drop in takes places on 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month (10am – 11:30am) and is completely confidential.

For more information or to speak to a member of the team please call 01422 415 550, or visit https://www.waythrough.org.uk/.../calderdale-recovery-steps/

💜 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - Day 13 💜

Karma Nirvana was established in 1993 as the first UK charity providing support to victims & survivors of honour-based abuse (HBA).

It is now the longest-established charity specialising in providing support for people impacted by HBA.

HBA is not widely recognised as a form of domestic abuse and is often misunderstood or dismissed in the name of ‘culture’ or ‘tradition’ – therefore it remains unhidden, and victims remain without support.

For more information on this topic and the available support please visit https://karmanirvana.org.uk/

Call 999 if there is an immediate risk to life.

💜 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - Day 11 💜

Abuse and violence don’t just affect younger people – 1 in 6 older people are victims of abuse and it is reported that 1 in 4 victims of domestic homicides are over the age of 60.

Older victims of domestic abuse are more likely to experience abuse from a family member or intimate partner and are significantly more likely to have a disability making them more vulnerable to abuse.

Hourglass is the only UK charity specifically focused on the abuse and neglect of older people and offer a lifeline for older men & women suffering from various forms of abuse.

Hourglass operate a free 24/7 helpline on 0808 808 8141 and online resources at www.wearehourglass.org.

💜 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - Day 9 💜

A non-molestation order is a type of injunction issued by a court and is typically done so to prevent an abuser from using or threatening physical violence, intimidating, harassing, pestering or communicating with a victim.

An order can also prevent the abuser coming within a certain distance of the victim, their home address or even attending their place of work. It can also include children in certain circumstances.

An order will also prevent an abuser from instructing or encouraging others to do any of those actions.

A non-molestation order can protect victims against behaviour that by itself may not be a criminal offence or in situations where the police have insufficient evidence to charge an abuser with a criminal offence such as assault.

If there is non-molestation order in place, then the police can make arrest for the offence of breaching that order. A non-molestation order is usually granted for six to 12 months.

For more information on non-molestation orders please visit: https://www.ncdv.org.uk/non-molestation-order/
