Love this! A testimonial from one of our Residents Matthew Davies, who has been with us for 4 months, and is today taking the next step in his journey and moving to a self contained flat! At Alpha, we believe in not only getting our clients clean, but also empowering them with the tools and essential life skills they will need to succeed!

"I’ve been in addiction for about 35 years, started when I had just left school really, but started smoking w**d around the age of 11-12 as well as drinking.

Then up popped the rave scene, with E’s and speed, at the age of 15 I tried He**in and Crack Co***ne for the first time, after that I never really looked back.

In and out of jail, which, when I was in there was like a recharge, ready to come out clean, and start all over again.

Then I met my kids mums, had 3 kids, 2 girls and 1 boy, and of course I was only present when I wanted to be and not when they actually needed me. I was fortunate that my family stepped up and brought them up. As my love of drugs was stronger than that of the love for my kids. Which one day I hope to get back in my life.
December 23rd 2025 I was made homeless for the first time, I was taken in by a homeless charity in Halifax, which has been the start of my journey.

I was asked if I had ever heard of Alpha House, which I hadn’t, and WOW, has it changed my life!

I began my journey at Alpha House on New Years Eve, which was the first time not having a pipe at midnight, and I’ve been here ever since, 80 days clean and serene.

The group’s are letting me find out who I am as a person, and to understand my addiction and why I’ve been the way I have been for the last 35 years. And I love it here, the staff that work here are all warm and friendly, and have kept me sat in my seat. And you know, I get this chance of life for free, I just have to do what is asked of me, No jail, Doctor or probation has been able to do it, but Alpha House has, and I am forever grateful to everyone here at Alpha House for helping me do what I couldn’t do on my own."

Really productive day in one of our support units over the weekend! Some of our residents DTF printing football shirts for our own team! Their first match is this Friday so looking forward to seeing them in action. This week at Sober Supper Club we were treated to an absolute feast! 🍝

Alpha House clients Elliot and Michael stepped up and cooked spaghetti carbonara for the other residents and service users - and it went down an absolute treat. Delicious food, plenty of laughs and a great sense of unity around the table.

Moments like this are what recovery is all about: community, connection and lifting each other up. It was brilliant to see everyone come together and share a meal.

Huge credit to the lads for putting the effort in and bringing everyone together.

Amazing achievements at Alpha House! 🎉

We’re so proud to celebrate an incredible group of men who recently completed a series of qualifications designed to support their recovery and resettlement journey.

Over the past few months they’ve successfully completed:

✔️ Forklift Truck Licence
✔️ Barista Training
✔️ Food Hygiene Certification
✔️ First Aid Training

Their graduation creative art session was a chance to pause, reflect and celebrate just how far they’ve come.

Big things are happening at Alpha House Calderdale! 🎨

We’ve kicked off Phase 1 of transforming our basement social space - starting with the base coat for a brand new resident-designed mural!

A huge thank you to all of the residents who got stuck in and helped with the first stage. Your teamwork, effort and pride in your communal space is what recovery in action really looks like 💪

We’d also like to say a heartfelt thank you to our amazing local Calderdale community for donating paint. A special thank you to Dulux Huddersfield for generously donating also. 🎨👏

We can’t wait to see the residents’ design come to life on the walls in the coming weeks. Watch this space!

🎉 Well done lads! 🎉

We’re really proud to share that a group of Alpha House residents successfully completed forklift truck training and achieved their licence recently! 🚜✅

This is a fantastic achievement and an important step towards employment, confidence and independence. Gaining recognised qualifications like this opens real doors and the commitment shown throughout the training has been brilliant to see.

A huge well done to everyone involved - you earned it 💪

🎓💚 Workability Presentation Ceremony 💚🎓

We started back from the Christmas break with a presentation ceremony to celebrate the men completing their Workability exams. One of our two Diploma courses here at Alpha House.

Workability isn’t just about getting into work. It’s about building the mindset, confidence and life skills needed to move forward.

Some of the themes covered include:

✅ Mental health as a barrier & ability to work
✅ Finding strengths and recognising weaknesses
✅ Negative moods, anxiety & restlessness
✅ Feeling discouraged by obstacles
✅ Emotional rollercoasters & dealing with strong emotions
✅ Blaming others / complaining without action
✅ Purpose, planning & taking responsibility
✅ Dwelling on guilt & feelings of unworthiness
✅ Lack of motivation, lack of sleep & lack of purpose
✅ Difficulty making decisions & problem solving
✅ Criticism and disapproval (and how to cope with it)
✅ Teamwork skills, impulsive behaviour & preparing for work

It’s powerful stuff and seeing the men recognised for their effort and commitment at the presentation ceremony was genuinely inspiring.

👏 A huge well done to everyone who completed Workability.
Your progress matters, and you should feel proud of how far you’ve come.

And as always, thank you to the staff and supporters who help make opportunities like this possible. Education, structure and self-belief can be life-changing!

🎓✨ Celebrating Hard Work & Progress! ✨🎓

Over the past few weeks, the men at Alpha House have been completing their November / December exams, and we couldn’t be prouder of the effort, focus and determination they’ve shown.

For many, returning to learning takes real courage. These exams represent far more than qualifications. They reflect commitment, resilience and the decision to keep moving forward.

Just before we broke up for Christmas, we held a Presentation Day.

🎉 Each man was handed their certificate by our trustee, Fran, Head of Education, Daisy, & SWAP Education lead, Jimmy. It was a real celebration of achievement, encouragement and community.

👏 Huge congratulations to everyone - you’ve worked hard, and you should feel proud.

💚 A Creative Christmas at Alpha House💚

During Daisy’s creative session, we got into the festive spirit by crafting Christmas cards for family, friends and loved ones. It was a lovely moment of creativity, conversation and connection.

🎉 Huge congratulations to our 'Christmas Craft Competition' winners:

Thank you to everyone who took part and helped make the sessions such a joy. Moments like these remind us how important creativity, togetherness and community are - especially at this time of year.
