All funds raised will go towards resources for the Play Team to continue to provide therapeutic play to children and young people in hospital and the community.

Week commencing Monday 1st December 2025 is Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust Volunteer Appreciation Week.

With International Volunteer Day falling on Friday 5th December 2025.

If you have had the pleasure of coming across any of our volunteers, we would love to hear from you.

From being supported by our magnificent Meet and Greet volunteers, providing guidance of navigating through the hospitals and providing additional support to those with mobility aids, in taking them all the way to their appointments or to visit loved ones.

To our Ward Helpers, who provide teas and coffees and general aid on the wards, along with companionship.

To our Children and Young People Volunteers in Children and Young People at CHFT bringing play to the bedside of some of our most vulnerable younger patients, putting smiles on faces and having the hospital be a more comforting and less alien place to be when away from loved ones and friends.

In readiness for our Volunteer Appreciation Week, we are asking patients, visitors, families, friends, carers, to write a message of appreciation and thanks.

🌟 Earlier in the week, Emaan and her mum dropped off some Halloween treat bags for the Children to enjoy on the wards 👻 🎃 Emaan packed these treat bags herself, filling them with lots of homemade goodies including bracelets, necklaces and keyrings that she had made. 🌟 This week, we celebrated Play in Healthcare Week at both Calderdale and Huddersfield. The theme for this year was '5️⃣0️⃣ Years of Play'. Additionally, this year also marks the 3️⃣0️⃣th anniversary of the first Play in Healthcare Week, previously known as Play in Hospital Week. This week was an opportunity to showcase the power of play in a child's or young person's hospital journey🌟

Each day on Ward 3, activities were planned and organised to promoting different types of play:
Monday - Manipulative Play 🧩
Tuesday - Creative Play 🎨
Wednesday - Imaginative Play 💭
Thursday - Physical Play 🏃‍♂️‍➡️🤸🏾‍♀️
Friday - Learning through Play 💡

On Ward 4, the main focus was Learning through Play, which combines all the above 4 types of play, promoting play as a whole. 🎨🧸🏐🖍🚗👶🏼🦖👸🏽

The activities were a hit with the children and young people who attended our wards this week.

Great to see colleagues across health and education supporting the young people and families that we work with as part of a joined up team.

Fab to be involved in the Mainstream Inclusion Calderdale tool development and be working with our local schools and services today at the launch event. This has been developed with young people, their families as well as lots of local teams.

🌟 We received a lovely donation earlier this week from one of our Healthcare's on the Children's Ward, Lucy, and her auntie. This is her auntie's story and the reason for her generous donation. (Posted with permission) 🌟

I was asked by niece Lucy if I could donate some bits for a fundraiser at Calderdale Hospital, where she works on the children’s ward. While sorting through some things to give her, it really got me thinking about how truly amazing that ward is.

Last year, My beautiful Eva nearly died. 💔 She stopped breathing and was rushed into hospital, where she was placed on a ventilator. The staff were absolutely incredible, and the very next day she was transferred to Leeds. The day after that, Paige was also admitted with the same illness – thankfully not as severe.

A week later, Eva was stable enough to come back to Calderdale. Many of you know she’s had more hospital stays since then, in December and again in March.

With everything that was going on in our family, I never really got the chance to properly thank the amazing team who saved Eva’s life and supported us through such a terrifying time. So now, I want to do something special to give back. 💕

I managed to raise enough money to buy new toys for the children’s ward and some treats for the incredible staff who work so hard.

Without them, Eva simply wouldn’t be here today – and this is my way of showing just how much they mean to us. ❤️
