The theme of International Women’s Day this year is “Give to gain” and it asks a hard question: What are we actually giving?

Because the numbers tell a story we don’t always say out loud.

In the UK, more women are disabled than men. Around 27% of women (about 9.3 million people) compared with 22% of men.

Women also carry most of the caring load. Of the five million people providing unpaid care in England and Wales, 59% are women.

When care becomes paid work, the pattern barely changes - around 81–87% of social care roles are held by women.

Now add the sea into the mix.

Globally, women make up just 1–2% of seafarers. Even across the wider maritime sector, representation only rises to about 16–19%.

Which means the ocean, one of the most powerful and transformative environments we have, remains one of the least accessible professional spaces for women.

At Wetwheels we see something different.

We see women who arrive as carers and finally get a moment of freedom on the water.
Women who come aboard as participants and leave with a confidence they didn’t expect.
Women who crew, lead, organise and quietly make everything work.
Women across the maritime world who are expanding what the industry looks like.

So this International Women’s Day, we’re celebrating the women who show up, step aboard, and change what the horizon looks like for everyone else.

Because real progress doesn’t arrive with a hashtag.

It happens when people give their time, their support, their expertise and their belief that the water should belong to everyone.

This year, the Wetwheels Foundation is hosting our Charity Golf Day in support of Wetwheels Solent Boats - Portsmouth and Hamble, and we’d love you to be part of it.

Why are we posting on world hearing day? Well, Wetwheels Solent (Portsmouth) is all about access to experience and hearing care is about access to learning.

We can all agree with the beautifully simple idea that children need to hear properly if we expect them to learn.

In our ops meetings we talk a lot about physical access. Ramps, hoists, Wheelchair spaces but access is much bigger than that

We’re conscious that on the water, communication is everything. It creates a sense of safety, trust, joy and belonging.

This year’s World Hearing Day theme, “From communities to classrooms: hearing care for all children,” is about preventing avoidable hearing loss and identifying problems early.

Because children cannot learn what they cannot hear.

And inclusion only works when barriers are removed early, enough that they don’t quietly shape someone’s entire life - after confidence has already been eroded.

Whether it is mobility access or hearing care, the principle is the same for us:

Remove the barrier. Unlock the experience.

In classrooms, in communities and yes, at sea too!

And if you agree that no child should struggle in silence because a hearing issue was missed…
