Complementary therapies are treatments used alongside conventional medicine. The term is often confused with alternative medicine, so here are some definitions.
Conventional medicine focuses on understanding and correcting the problems that are causing symptoms.
A replacement for conventional medicine. Alternative medicine is based on historical or cultural traditions, rather than on scientific evidence. Neu You does not recommend that you replace medication with an alternative treatment.
Complementary Therapies
Complementary therapies can be used alongside your usual medical treatment. They tend to take a more holistic approach. So, they aim to treat the whole person mind, body and spirit rather than just the symptoms.
Integrated Medicine
Some experts use the term 'integrated medicine' to highlight that all therapies, conventional and complementary, are part of one process.
Do they help?
There is no simple answer to this question. There are so many types of therapies, it is impossible to generalise.
There is evidence to show that some complementary therapies have benefits. For other therapies, there is no research to prove any benefits.
At Neu You I listen to what my clients tell me and trust how they feel.
Clients may feel relief from pain for several days or weeks after a therapy, or they may not feel that a therapy is influencing their medical symptoms at all. However, they enjoy the experience and feel this is enough of a reason to continue.
Conventional medication goes through a thorough testing process before it is made available. Unfortunately, complementary therapies are not as thoroughly tested. Because each therapy is different, and because some therapies are more popular than others, the way these trials are run differs each time (for example, how many people are involved or what the researchers are testing and how).
This makes it impossible to compare therapies and tell you what does and does not work.
There are many reasons why people may use complementary therapies alongside prescribed medication, including:
they feel conventional medicine isnβt controlling their symptoms
they view complementary therapy as a way of taking control of their own health
they enjoy the social aspect
they find complementary therapies relaxing
Some complementary therapies are regulated by statutory law, including osteopaths and chiropractors. Other therapies are not. This means anyone can practise without qualifications or insurance. If you receive a treatment from an unqualified or uninsured therapist and something goes wrong, you may find yourself in a vulnerable position.
