Overnight, the clocks went back one hour, and as the days grow shorter and darker, people living with dementia may feel the effects of this change particularly strongly.

The shift in daylight hours can sometimes be particularly difficult for individuals who experience sundowning: a state of increased confusion, restlessness or agitation that occurs in the late afternoon or evening. Changes in light levels can disrupt the body’s internal clock, making these symptoms more noticeable at this time of year.

If someone you care for is affected by sundowning, you can support them by maintaining regular routines, providing distractions and offering reassurance. Small steps can make a big difference.

"This has to be one of the most emotional days I have had with Cherished Care Services. Took xx to the village she grow up in, we passed moss lane the house she lived in and fields she played in with her brother. Then to finish tea and cake and what was once her old post office. Xx had tears in her eye but told me they were happy tears"
