Baby its cold outside❄️
With the drop in temperatures this week we thought we would share some tips on keeping your pets warm and happy🐶
To keep pets safe in the cold, provide them with a warm, dry indoor space with extra blankets, limit outdoor time, and protect their paws from ice, snow, and chemicals like rock salt and antifreeze. Keep outdoor pets' shelters sheltered from wind and rain and consider providing pets with coats or sweaters if they get cold easily. Extra bedding and covers over their hunches will help to keep them warm and dry. Make sure they have ample food available also. Always supervise pets and have a plan for indoor enrichment to ensure they stay active and healthy during winter.
Indoor care
⭐Provide a warm resting spot: Give your pet extra blankets or a heated pet bed for their sleeping area. Place beds away from drafts or consider raised beds to keep them off cold floors.
⭐Encourage indoor activity: Provide extra indoor toys and playtime to keep your pet active, especially if they are spending less time outdoors.
⭐Ensure access to water: Keep fresh drinking water available, as indoor heating can lead to dehydration.
⭐Offer a healthy diet: Some pets may need to eat more in winter to maintain body temperature, but consult your vet to determine the right amount.
Outdoor safety
⭐Limit outdoor exposure: Do not leave pets outside for extended periods in cold weather, and never leave them in a cold car.
⭐Protect paws: Put dog boots on your pet for walks to protect their paws from cold ground, ice, and de-icing salts.
⭐Wipe paws and fur after walks: After every walk, use a towel to dry your pet and wipe their paws to remove any salt or chemicals they may have stepped in. Trim fur around paws and other areas if snow or ice tends to clump there.
⭐Check for hazards: Ensure your pet's outdoor shelter is dry, draft-free, and secure. For small animals, bring their hutch inside if possible or cover it with blankets, leaving room for ventilation.
⭐Be mindful of ice: Keep pets away from frozen ponds and lakes, as they can fall through thin ice.
⭐Use caution with cars: Tap your car's hood before starting the engine in winter to wake up any animals that may be sheltering underneath.
Other precautions
⭐Watch for signs of cold: Shivering, lethargy, and trying to hide can all be signs that your pet is too cold.
⭐Secure household chemicals: Store antifreeze and other poisons out of reach. Clean up any spills immediately, as even small amounts can be deadly.
⭐Make walks safe: Use reflective clothing and collars for walking in low light conditions. Ensure your pet's gear is in good working order.
