Meet Karen, one of our brilliant maternity care assistants.

We pulled Karen from her busy schedule for a few minutes to ask her the following questions!

I have been an MCA for 10 months.

My favourite part of being a MCA is seeing the look of pure happiness on new parents faces when they meet their baby for the first time. I also really enjoy showing new parents how to meet the needs of their new baby.

My top piece of advice for someone about to give birth is to have an open mind and believe in yourself.

When not at work I love spending time with my grandchildren and my 2 cockapoos who keep me busy.I also love travelling somewhere hot.

My career high is helping new mums accomplish breast feeding and being confident in everything.

Known by some as the best meal of your life, that post-birth tea and toast provides a pause, after the birth of your baby, where you get to spend time as a family and take in the journey that has just preceded you.

However, that is not where your care ends. Following the birth of your baby, and all being well, we support uninterrupted skin-to-skin for at least an hour before any further examinations are conducted. This also allows time for baby to have that first feed. We then offer you a postnatal examination including your vital signs and we will then support you to the bathroom and for that first shower after birth.

For baby, we conduct, with your consent, a newborn head-to-toe examination, including their weight and length etc. We also offer all newborns prophylactic Vitamin K which you can discuss whether you want with your community midwife in your birth planning.

Once ready, we then transfer yourself and baby from the birth room into our postnatal sunflower room where you will stay until discharge. Your time in this room is about establishing feeding, managing your postnatal recovery and supporting you and your family in your journey with a newborn.

Before discharge, another postnatal examination will be offered, along with hearing checks for baby, another top-to-toe examination, by the paediatrician or specialist trained midwife, and then a chat with the midwives about the process of care once home. Discharge can be as soon as 6 hours after birth depending on how you and baby are doing!

We canโ€™t wait to see you soon, support you in your journey to parenthood, and make you that famous tea and toast ๐Ÿ’œ

โ€œSkin-to-skinโ€

Here is one of our midwives, Georgia, having skin-to-skin contact when her daughter was born in 2019.

But what exactly is skin-to-skin and why do we recommend it?

When baby is born, instinctively many women and birthing people bring their babies up onto their chest. Midwives support this by drying baby (to help with reducing heat loss) and placing baby onto the motherโ€™s warm, bare chest. We then cover both mother and baby with plenty of warm blankets and recommend this is continued for at least an hour or until after the first feed.

But skin-to-skin extends beyond the birthing room! If a mother or baby require soothing or comforting, even once home, (and for many months/years to come), skin-to-skin has been shown to be extremely beneficial.

Itโ€™s not only mothers who can do this though! Many birth partners are encouraged to continue skin-to-skin in the birthing rooms if the woman or birthing person is unable to, for example, when taking a shower or for any medical reason. And when home, siblings can get involved too! What a great tool for bonding!

Look at this list of benefits:

* Regulates babyโ€™s heart rate, breathing and temperature.
* Stimulates hormone release to support breastfeeding initiation.
* Enables colonisation of babyโ€™s skin with their mothers friendly bacteria, reducing infection risk.
* Calms and relaxes both mum and baby.

UNICEF UK have some great info on skin-to-skin, have a read before the big day and be sure to inform your midwife of your wish for skin-to-skin after birth.
