The optical precision behind star trackers 🌌

For centuries, stars have guided travellers across oceans and continents, and today, the same principle helps satellites maintain orientation in space.

Modern-day star trackers work by capturing images of a star field and comparing them to onboard catalogues, calculating a spacecraft's exact orientation. It's a process that demands exceptional optical precision and calls for high-specification optical components.

Why are so many engineers and designers using zinc selenide for high-temperature applications? 🧐

When it comes to infrared optics, germanium is often the go-to material. But in high-temperature environments, another substrate is quickly becoming the superior choice.

While germanium's optical transmission begins to degrade at elevated temperatures, zinc selenide maintains reliable performance at much higher operating temperatures, making it the preferred choice for demanding thermal applications.

Beyond temperature resistance, it also offers excellent transmission in both the infrared spectrum and the visible range, which simplifies optical alignment in laser systems. It's particularly valued in CO2 laser applications, FLIR systems and thermal imaging.
