Today is ๐
My brother Oscar has a severe learning disability, autism and is non-verbal.
A lot of people find Oscar very challenging and my family and I receive comments like โI donโt know how you copeโ. It is not a choice. We have learned valuable lessons from having Oscar in our lives. We have learned how to love without words and patience.
Growing up and whilst teaching in special schools and working in the NHS in London with autistic young people I noticed the lack of support for people like him and for siblings.
Siblings often face extreme stress, isolation and loneliness.
I wanted to change that and support the most complex individuals and their families.
This is why I set up the charity The Sibling Group and then went onto set up our day centre Oscarโs Pathway๐
Our siblings enjoy fun groups each month and trips to different places! A lot of our siblings are unable to do this with their families due to their brother or sisters complex needs.
We hope to continue to support our families for many years to come! ๐
I am so proud of everything our charity has achieved and we are soon moving to an amazing building and can expand our offering! - Grace (CEO and founder)
