Reiki offers a safe space in which to explore who you are, and see what comes up.

When we receive Reiki, it can potentially begin to alter the ways in which we perceive ourselves, and the situations we find ourselves in. It can literally change your reality.

This is what it did for me.

Because of this, I am always conscious of the responsibility I hold as a practitioner.

Safe spaces and sanctuaries are all too rare these days, but if you are going to be exploring who you are, your values, your past, your present, and what you want from life; then it’s something you absolutely need.

To me, a safe space is somewhere you can go without feeling judged. Somewhere you can bring up your experiences and have them met with empathy and understanding. Or somewhere you can just be without words.

When we begin to see ourselves, and our world, in a different light; it can be confusing. It can feel unsafe, unsteady and unreal. This is when we need our sanctuaries and our safe spaces.

Reiki is a supporting and loving energy. If it shows you change, it because that is what’s meant for your highest good. But as well as being disruptive, it is ultimately healing.

Imagine having the energy of the universe in your corner – rooting for you to be the most relaxed, most in-tune, most grounded, most authentic version of you there has ever been. That’s the power of a Reiki session.

This can make it unpredictable, but only ever in a good way.

So if you were to ask me if Reiki could help you, I would say yes.

If you were to ask me how Reiki would help you, I would be more vague, because the Reiki energy shows up for you as you are now; in this moment.

In a world where it can be hard to show up for yourself, why not let the universe show up for you instead.

We are all just a messy bunch of contradictions, and that just makes us perfectly human.

I used to think I couldn’t start a business until everything was flawless. I used to think my Instagram had to be picture-perfect. I used to think I had to be impeccable in order for people to book.

But I’m moving on from that – and unapologetically so.

I show up messy, in all my glorious contradictions. It’s who I am. And it’s who you are too.

My Reiki is different because it’s Reiki without the sprinkles.

My Reiki teacher was quite strict about what constitutes Reiki. Her teacher was even more strict. To him, there was only one form of Reiki – the one that Mikao Usui was gifted around a hundred years ago. Anything else he calls ‘Reiki plus’.

Reiki plus is anything that adds on to the healing system of Reiki. This can include:

Crystal healing.

Sound baths.

Drumming.

Oracle card pulling.

Massage.

The list is endless, and none of it is bad. A lot of it is absolutely wonderful. It’s just ‘Reiki plus’. And maybe I just haven’t found my ‘plus’. Maybe I never will.

The energy healing sessions that I offer are all Reiki, so at a regular in-person session you will receive around 45 to 50 minutes of pure unadulterated Reiki loveliness. No plus. Just Reiki.

You’ve heard of Distant Reiki? When a practitioner sends Reiki energy to a client that lives nowhere near them. It is the intention that directs the energy to where it needs to be.

Now think about group healings such as sound baths where Reiki is given to multiple people at once.

Then combine the two.

Ta dah… and The Guinea Pig Sessions were born.

This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while – share the experience of Reiki with those who either couldn’t, or weren’t yet ready, to make an appointment.

Dates and instructions will follow, but the idea is simple. On a set date, at a set time, I will send out Reiki energy with the intention that it be received by those who would like to receive it.

Now, the original founder of Reiki stated that it should be given in exchange for something else. I’m still working on how to get around this, but it wouldn’t be the first Reiki I have given without receiving, and so far so good.

Whether it’s your first session, or you’re a seasoned pro, these are my favourite four ways to make sure you get the most from your Reiki session:

1. Come with an open mind. New folk and regulars alike – try not to arrive with expectations, or beliefs about what has to happen to make it a great session. What will be will be. Likewise, don’t turn up with your sceptical head on – that doesn’t benefit anyone. That said… I’m always up for a challenge!

2. Wear comfortable clothes: I don’t care if they’re baggy, saggy or faded. The comfier the better. The whole idea is to feel at home and at peace – you can’t do either with tight waist bands and itchy fabrics.

3. If you are new – or even just new to me – don’t worry if you can’t relax during the first session. Going somewhere new is always going to put your body on standby. Just try to go with the flow, and see what comes up.

4. Definitely an important one for everybody – try to schedule your appointment when you can take it easy for a little while afterwards. Your life doesn’t work that way? Then at least try to drink plenty of fluids and take some deep breaths to help integrate the healing that’s taking place.

You can read more about Reiki aftercare in my blog post. I shall attempt to remember to put the link in stories…

And the wheel turns once more to Samhain (pronounced sah-wen or sow-en), bringing with it a time of reflection and thoughtfulness.

Samhain is an authentically old festival that can be traced back over 2,000 years, to the time of myth and legend. In Irish mythologies, Samhain was the time when the doors between our world and that of the fae could be opened. Cassian anyone…?

In other parts of the UK this was the night when the worlds of the the living and the dead were closest, and the souls of the dead could return for this one night only.

Samhain marks the start of the dark half of the year, the evenings come earlier and the mornings that little bit later. Nature is turning inwards, and our countryside is painted in jewel tones of red and orange, with leaves carpeting the ground and berries on trees and hedgerows.

The land has a stillness and internal reflective quality to it, and we have the chance to do likewise. This November Eve, or whatever you choose to call it, make time to pause and be still. In this stillness, try to listen to the messages your body is trying to communicate, or any insights you notice. Let’s turn the time of plastic pumpkins into one of reflection.

But to be fair, who doesn’t love a pumpkin?!

As a sensitive and creative soul, you have a strong moral compass. You may not realise it, but if you’re reading this I can almost guarantee that you hate injustice as much as I do.

This ‘north star’ that we live by isn’t necessarily visible by others, and this can lead to occasional hurt and confusion.

Have you ever been accused of doing something that you’d never ever do in a thousand years? Hurts, doesn’t it? But the other person sees it as a justifiable question.

Did you take the last biscuit? Did you kiss my boyfriend (okay, so I’m going back a bit with that one!) Did you do this on purpose to hurt me?

We wouldn’t do these things. But still the questions are asked because, just perhaps, they would. Or they’ve had it done to them before and they remember the hurt.

As a sensitive soul, it is more important than ever to remember and recognise that other people’s actions and reactions say more about them than they ever do about you. And then take the time to be grateful that you have no idea how it feels to be the biscuit-stealing boyfriend-kisser they thought you were.

Chronic illness turns us into google-crazed researchers – searching, searching, searching for the cure. For that one illusive therapy that is going to magically make everything better. Trust me, I know. I’ve done more than just bought the t-shirt.

So it makes sense that a lot of chronically ill people find Reiki.

When you’re so used to constantly monitoring your symptoms, or doing more research, here is something intrinsically comforting about putting yourself in the hands of someone else who could help.

But the truth is, if your body and your mind don’t feel safe, then no amount of holistic therapies will truly help. Chronic illness can easily tip over into chronic stress, which creates a dysregulated nervous system.

Nervous system regulation is possible – the fact that I’m back and typing this today is living testament to fact it’s possible. For me, Reiki was the gateway to my nervous system. It made me realise how chronically stressed and disconnected I’d become. And once you recognise the problem, there comes the opportunity and invitation to work on it. Just don’t get caught up trying to fix it to perfection!

Reiki spans the spiritual and the scientific realms, and that’s one of things I love most about it. The magical and the academic in harmony. Although I dare say the scientists may not be with me on this one!

It is a truth, universally acknowledged, that everything is made of energy. You, me, and the whole entire cosmos. Atoms are 99.99999% energy. This is a fact. I won’t say it’s indisputable, because these days some people will dispute anything…

And yet this fact collides with another fact, this one historically recorded, about a man who climbed a mountain and received the esoteric knowledge of a new healing system.

The system of Reiki, as we know it today, originated in Japan around 100 years ago; but has its roots deeply entwined in Tendai Buddhism, Shintoism and Soto Zen.

In Tendai Buddhism, thought and practice is rooted in the notion that all beings possess the infinite potential to discover the truth together.

Ritual, rather than belief, is at the heart of Shintoism. These rituals enable its followers to communicate with invisible beings and energies.

Soto Zen Buddhism is centred around silent, seated, meditation with no purpose in mind.

For those who practice Reiki, it is easy to see how these ancient practices come together in both intention and ritual. For those receiving it, how amazing is it to have all this ancient spirituality working for your good?
