ACTIVE AGAINST CANCER is a free service, delivered by Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust with founder funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research.

We deliver activity programmes & exercise guidance to improve cancer patient outcomes in Harrogate!

"I thought I'd give it a go."

When he was first told about the programme, David was unsure about the benefits of exercising following a cancer diagnosis and sought reassurance from his clinical team. With their support he registered for our service...and hasn't looked back!

📈 In 2025 was able to support more patients than ever!

Building on 2024's strong figures, we enjoyed 15,780 patient visits and handled 965 referrals, a considerable rise on the previous year. It has been really rewarding to see so many patients benefit from our free NHS service as part of their ongoing clinical care.

Steve has taken on a year-long virtual challenge to cycle, walk and run the Trans-Canada Highway, raising funds for - via Harrogate Hospital & Community Charity - on his journey.

💥 We are delighted to announce that our Ripon classes are resuming TODAY!

The new home of in is now at Ripon Leisure and Wellbeing Hub - The Jack Laugher Centre. Based on Dallamires Lane, the centre will be the venue for all assessments and fitness classes offered as part of our service.

🎅🏼 Active Against Cancer's classes in Harrogate will be closing for the holidays on Christmas Eve (after the 10.15am ReActive Balance class) and sessions will restart on Friday 2nd January.

There will be no classes on December 25th, 26th, 29th, 30th, 31st or January 1st.

Our office will be open as usual during the holiday for help and enquiries.

Suzy Walker, Lead Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist for the lung team, explains why patients' reactions when they are first told about the programme can be as varied as the patients themselves.

Reactions can depend on the patient's age, level of fitness and whether they've ever engaged with a structured fitness programme before.

Suzy and her team explain the mental and physical health benefits for every patient and emphasise the important role exercise can play in post-treatment recovery.
