Active Against Cancer

Active Against Cancer ACTIVE AGAINST CANCER is a free service, delivered by Harrogate & District NHS Foundation Trust with founder funding from Yorkshire Cancer Research.

We deliver activity programmes & exercise guidance to improve cancer patient outcomes in Harrogate!

Suzy Walker, Lead Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist for the lung team, explains why patients' reactions when they are first told about the programme can be as varied as the patients themselves.

Reactions can depend on the patient's age, level of fitness and whether they've ever engaged with a structured fitness programme before.

Suzy and her team explain the mental and physical health benefits for every patient and emphasise the important role exercise can play in post-treatment recovery.

Whilst undergoing cancer treatment can be a long and arduous process, our patients share the small moments they cherish which highlight the progress they have made.

For Joan, her proudest moment came during her second assessment by Steve Henwood, our Lead Physical Trainer for Oncology.

⭐️ 'You do feel it is part of a joined-up system'.

Like many of our patients, Richard took comfort in the fact that is an NHS service, meaning that our cancer-specialist staff communicate with your clinical team to ensure you receive the most appropriate care in a timely manner.
