Relax and Read is a weekly group meeting at Everyman Harrogate

We’ve covered the benefits of proper breathing, good posture and the different between the conscious and subconscious mind.
I then talked about the nervous system, the fight/flight response and stress vs chronic stress and how it affects our body and mind.

We’ve also practiced some breathing exercises and mindfulness then read our books in companionable silence. (Tea and coffee included).

This week we will talk briefly about the Vagus nerve, how to stimulate it and how it helps our body relax.

Forward folds in yoga are very common but also very hard for a lot of people. Tightness in the hamstrings and lower back can be an issue but can be easily worked around by simply bending my the knees and being aware of posture (think chin towards shins instead of head to knee).

Benefits are:
A great stretch for the back body
Improves flexibility
Stimulates digestion, especially when paired with deep breathing
Slightly increases blood pressure toward the head, which can have a calming affect in the nervous system.

Yoga is back on as normal today at 7:30pm. Remember to bring blankets, comfy socks and extra layers for relaxation.

Happy Monday all.

Thank you everyone who came to my first Relax and Read group yesterday. We talked about the importance of proper posture and abdominal breath, the conscious and subconscious mind and the benefits to deeper breathing, such as:
- improving focus and concentration
- releases tension
- builds body awareness
- activates the para-sympathetic nervous system, helping to shift us out of fight / flight

And we had a lovely 40 mins of quiet reading.
Next week I’ll be talking more about the nervous system. Hopefully see you then ☺️

Our conscious mind is always switched on whilst we are awake. Don’t worry about the mind wandering off - just bring it gently back to focus when it does.

Your conscious mind is 90% of your overall consciousness, even if your conscious mind is noisy your subconscious still gets the benefit in slowing down.
