I am approaching 2 years into teaching yoga, and wow, it’s definitely been a journey. As a student I had no idea the challenges that teachers face everyday and just assumed they spent their days in a bubble of zen (how wrong I was).
Here’s what I’ve learned so far:
There will always be someone more experienced than you. Don’t compare yourself. There’s space for all of us.
You will find a strength inside of you, that you didn't know you had.
If you are sick, then rest. You aren't going to be able to deliver your best whilst feeling unwell.
There will be full classes and there will be classes where only one shows up, but don't doubt your worth.
Don’t copy flows you find online, yes be inspired but create from your heart, your students will feel the difference.
Don’t get lost in all of the online noise. There will always be someone saying you’re doing it wrong…....
Wrong for using notes, wrong for not.
Wrong for demoing, wrong for not.
Wrong for using music, wrong for silence.
Wrong for using Sanskrit, wrong for not using it “properly.”
You really can’t win that game, so don’t play it.
At some point, you’ll realise you genuinely don’t know your left from your right, and somehow, that’s okay.
You’ll also invent new anatomy terms. “Toe Thumb” is still a personal favourite.
Trust your voice. Trust your heart. Trust the love that brought you to the practice in the first place.
There will be moments when it all feels overwhelming. That’s your cue to come back to your own practice, again and again.
More than anything: believe in yourself and your offering. Bring your energy into this beautiful, evolving practice. Not everyone will resonate with it, and that’s okay.
We can grow with the times while still honouring what yoga is at its core.
Authenticity and intention matter most.
And never forget, your students don’t need perfection. They need a human.
🤍
Yoga teachers, can you relate to any of these?
