When love and loss spark extraordinary action ✨ Meet Claire - a dedicated St Clare supporter on a mission to raise £25,000 for hospice care in her biggest challenge year yet.

Claire’s journey with St Clare began in 2017, after her dad was cared for by the hospice. Since then, her small acts of support have grown into a series of incredible challenges.

"Over the past five years, I’ve taken on a few different challenges, and my son Hector (14) did a 1km-a-day lockdown running challenge in 2021. We had a treadmill at home, so we thought it would be a great challenge for Hector, and he managed to raise a total of £3,638!”

Claire's motivation deepened further following the death of her son's girlfriend's mum, Tara, who was also cared for by St Clare before she died in late 2024.

“For the past few years, I’ve dedicated my fundraising challenges to my dad… but Tara was only 52 – the same age I am now – which really brought home how precious life is and made me want to push myself even more to raise money in both their memories.”

Later this year, Claire will swap her running shoes for hiking boots as she takes on an epic Sahara Desert Trek in aid of hospice care.

She added, “I’m doing the Sahara Trek with my friend Debbie, who I met 30 years ago in Australia. We’ll be trekking all day, covered in sand, and sleeping in the desert on roll mats. There won’t be any showers or proper toilets, but I think that’s all part of the challenge!”

Training is already underway, and Claire has smashed through her first £1,000 thanks to the support of friends, family and colleagues.

"£25,000 is a big target, but I’m determined to give it my best shot.”

Thank you Claire - your courage, determination and compassion help make hospice care possible for local families 🧡

"I'm so pleased to have been referred to St Clare. It's comforting to know someone is always there if I need them."

Margaret, 82, had heart failure and a rare form of blood cancer. She was being cared for by St Clare Hospice at home - as home was a special and important place for her.

"From the moment I walked in to this house, it had such a lovely feel," she said.

In the last months of her life, Margaret chose to stop active treatment and focus on comfort and peace.

"I know it won't be long now, and I've had to think about where I want to be when the end comes. I'm so pleased to have been referred to St Clare. It's comforting to know someone is always there if I need them."

Margaret received regular visited from Sam, a St Clare Clinical Nurse Specialist, and care from the Patient and Family Support Service.

"Sam is so knowledgeable, and the advice about my medication has been incredibly helpful."

With your help, our Clinical Nurse Specialists can provide expert care, advice and reassurance to people facing life-limiting illnesses across West Essex and the borders of East Hertfordshire. People like Margaret.

Thank you 💙

About St Clare Hospice

St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth.

Our approach to care gives patients, their families and carers, the confidence to cope so that, together, they can enjoy the best possible quality of life, whether at home or in the Hospice.

With limited NHS funding, we need to raise around 60% of our costs each year to provide our vital services; this year our costs were £4.8m and we forecast this will rise to over £5m next year.

We therefore rely on our local community to help us raise money each year so we can continue being there for local families facing one of the most difficult journeys in life.
