The festive season isn’t merry for everyone 💔

This , we want to say something important: it’s okay to find Christmas and New Year hard when someone you love has died.

• Putting up the tree without them 🎄
• Hearing carols that suddenly hurt 🎶
• Finding a gift they would have loved - and feeling that bittersweet ache 🎁
• Watching life go on for others while you feel stuck 💔

If this feels familiar, you’re not alone. We’re here to listen.

“Before we had help from the Hospice, Dad would lie awake, worried he’d miss Mum calling for him. Those nights were the loneliest for him. We don’t want anyone else to feel that way.”

St Clare Hospice’s night-sitting service gave Emma and Sarah’s family peace, care and rest when they need it most 🧡

This Christmas, please help us St Clare raise £75,000 to fund a year of night-sits in 2026 – so no family has to face the night alone.

We loved spreading festive cheer this week with West Essex Talking Therapies! 🎄

Together, we hosted a seasonal gathering for older adults - a chance to celebrate, connect, and share ideas to help shape local wellbeing services 💬🗨️

Guests got creative decorating Christmas baubles while learning about St Clare Hospice’s services and the emotional wellbeing support that Talking Therapies offers locally.

A huge thank you to West Essex Talking Therapies for partnering with us, and to Vita Health Group for supporting the event. Feedback is invaluable to the hospice as it helps us continue to develop our services and deliver outstanding, expert hospice care to the community we serve.

“Every night-sit reminds me why this work matters. I meet people at the most vulnerable moment of their lives, and the relief on their face when I arrive at the door stays with me.

“They’re exhausted, so worried about what the night might bring, and unsure who to turn to. We, as healthcare assistants, step in so they don’t have to face those hours alone. We protect their loved one’s comfort and dignity, and we give families the gift of rest.”

But to keep doing this every night of the year, St Clare Hospice needs your help. We’re trying to raise £75,000 by Christmas to bring light into their darkest hours ✨

Your donation will bring safety, warmth and kindness into someone’s home when their world feels small and dark. Help us keep that light shining 🧡

“When I walk into someone’s home at night, I see the strain in their face before they even say a word. Families caring for a loved one at the end of their life are so tired, holding everything together with pure love and not much sleep.

“My role is to ease that weight. To sit beside their loved one with gentleness and skill so they can finally close their eyes without and get some much-needed rest. I saw that with Doug. He just needed to know Sue was safe, cared for and not alone. Being that reassurance is something I’ll never take for granted.”

But Pauline can’t deliver this exceptional care without you. Help us raise £75,000 by Christmas to make sure families aren’t left to cope alone next year 🧡

Please give what you can and help us bring calm, care and compassion into homes when it matters most: https://bit.ly/3WztdEN

About St Clare Hospice

St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth.

Our approach to care gives patients, their families and carers, the confidence to cope so that, together, they can enjoy the best possible quality of life, whether at home or in the Hospice.

With limited NHS funding, we need to raise around 60% of our costs each year to provide our vital services; this year our costs were £4.8m and we forecast this will rise to over £5m next year.

We therefore rely on our local community to help us raise money each year so we can continue being there for local families facing one of the most difficult journeys in life.
