This National Doctors Day, we wanted to spotlight one of our wonderful specialist doctors - Dr Enam 🩺

Dr Enam's palliative care journey began when he took on a placement at St Clare as a GP trainee in 2008.

"That placement led me to change my mind about being a GP and I chose a career in palliative care. I went on to do a post-graduate diploma in palliative medicine at Cardiff University and became a specialist in palliative medicine in 2023."

When asked about what he enjoys most about his job, Enam said: "I can spend time with the patient and family members and get to know them as people - not just their symptoms, but their stories, their fears, their hopes.

"For me, this work is far more than just a job. It’s a kind of vocation. It’s my passion. And my patients teach me constantly. I learn on a daily basis from my patients. For me, every patient is a book… you try to open and read them, and you learn from them.

"Palliative medicine brings together so many dimensions of life. It’s a combination of medicine, philosophy, and spirituality. Here at St Clare you can feel and touch compassion… it becomes very tangible to you."

When asked about a patient who he'll always remember, Enam shared: "I remember caring for a young woman in 2009, and it stayed with me. She was understandably frightened. When she arrived, she was independent and walked into the Unit. One of the first things she asked me was whether anything could cure her cancer. She was only 26 with young boys and it showed just how much hope and fear she was carrying at the same time.

"My supervisor, Professor Qamar, and I sat with her and had an open, honest conversation. We listened to what she was really asking, explored what she was hoping for, and tried to make sure she felt heard at a moment that was overwhelming for her.

"Looking back, that experience shaped a lot of my approach to palliative care. It taught me the importance of taking time, communicating gently and clearly, and supporting people not just with their symptoms but with the emotional and psychological burdens they are carrying too."

Palliative medicine at St Clare is rooted not just in clinical expertise, but in people. Dr Enam embodies this blend of skill, time and compassion and we couldn't be more grateful that he is part of Team St Clare 💛

Led by our experienced family therapist Amanda Orange and specially trained volunteers, the session includes creative activities, memory-making, storytelling and child-led group conversations - always at each young person’s own pace.

‘I’m taking on the St Clare Hospice 10k run in memory Nicky, who I can only describe as my second mother. Nicky was one of the strongest and most positive people I’ve ever known, and anyone who met her remembers her warmth, kindness and smile.’

Joining our 10k runners this year is 19-year-old Stansted local, Layla Ellis, running in memory of family friend Nicola ‘Nicky’ Berg. Nicky died in 2025 and Layla has already raised an incredible £1,430 in her honour.

Layla said, ‘Nicky bravely faced Stage 3 Triple Negative breast cancer for around five years. Even on the hardest days, she chose hope and focused on the good. When her illness progressed, she was referred to St Clare where the care she received was extraordinary. The team supported not only Nicky, but also Andy and their boys, Max and Louis, and welcomed all of us who came to visit. Knowing she spent her final days so beautifully cared for, surrounded by love, brings us comfort.’

Layla has been training hard: ‘I couldn’t run for more than a minute when I started, so I began with walks, built up my stamina in the gym, and then took on park runs with my sister. Whenever I feel like stopping, I think about everything Nicky went through with such dignity, and it keeps me going.

Fundraising has already topped £1,000 - an amount that could cover the cost of running the hospice’s GriefLine for over a week - which shows how loved Nicky is and always will be.

If anyone is considering fundraising for a charity event, my advice is to just do it - stay consistent and let love and kindness fuel you.’

Feeling inspired?

You can still join Layla on the start line at the St Clare Hospice 10k Run on Sunday 12th April 2026. Entry is £21 standard, £19 affiliated, and £19 for wheelchair racers – and if you raise £200+, you’ll get a free personalised running vest!

We are still on a high from our incredible St Clare Shimmer Ball 🖤✨

Thank you so much to everyone who joined us to shimmer, sparkle, and show your amazing support for St Clare Hospice. We loved hosting you.

There was lots to enjoy - the casino games, a thrilling auction, a fantastic performance from The Buzz Band, and of course the delicious food served by Radisson Blu Hotel London Stansted Airport. It was a night we’ll always remember.

We're thrilled to share that you helped raise over £20,000 for St Clare Hospice 🤩

£20,000 could help cover the cost of running our whole Hospice at Home team for 10 days. A typical visit might include two healthcare assistants gently and professionally washing and shaving someone in the last weeks of life, helping them feel comfortable and regain a sense of dignity.

From all of us at St Clare - thank you so much.

And of course a special thank you to...

About St Clare Hospice

St Clare Hospice is a charity providing specialist palliative care to improve the lives of people living with a terminal or life-limiting illness in West Essex and East Hertfordshire, including Bishop’s Stortford and Sawbridgeworth.

Our approach to care gives patients, their families and carers, the confidence to cope so that, together, they can enjoy the best possible quality of life, whether at home or in the Hospice.

With limited NHS funding, we need to raise around 60% of our costs each year to provide our vital services; this year our costs were £4.8m and we forecast this will rise to over £5m next year.

We therefore rely on our local community to help us raise money each year so we can continue being there for local families facing one of the most difficult journeys in life.
