Congratulations to RVC graduate Josh Henley, who has been named in the London Vet Show’s Class of 2025: 30 Under Thirty!

During his time studying at the RVC, Josh received an EMS+ grant thanks to your support, helping him complete a dream placement working with exotic animals.

Since graduating, Josh has gone from strength to strength, joining Suffolk Exotic Vets, where he now cares for a wide range of species including reptiles, birds, and small mammals! He’s also preparing to deliver CPD webinars for other vets on exotic species.

🐆 Dr Catherine Hauw, one of our Wild Animal Research Scholars, was able to travel to Namibia to investigate lead exposure in cheetahs and leopards, supported by the Aitchison-Tait Trust.

During her placement, Catherine discovered that captive cheetahs were being unknowingly fed lead-contaminated meat, the first study of its kind to reveal this hidden threat.

Her findings have now been published as part of major international research led by the RVC, showing how lead-shot meat poses a serious risk not only to wildlife, but to entire ecosystems and even human health.

Now studying for her PhD, Catherine continues her vital work on lead poisoning in African carnivores, calling for a switch to non-lead ammunition to protect both animals and people! Read the full story here: rvcact.com/cheetahs

This , we’re proud to support cutting-edge research into diabetes in dogs.

Thanks to funding from The Beryl Evetts and Robert Luff Animal Welfare Trust, PhD student Arielle Johnson Pitt is exploring why some dogs develop diabetes alongside pancreatic problems. One of her early findings shows that some diabetic dogs have hidden signs of inflammation, even if they appear healthy, suggesting this condition may be underdiagnosed in many patients.

Last month, we invited supporters to share memories of their beloved pets, those who brought joy, comfort, and companionship into their lives. Many joined us at our Pause for Paws event, a special day spent together celebrating and remembering these cherished friends.

Their stories show why our Memory Tree is so special: a place to celebrate, reflect, and remember our faithful friends together.

You can dedicate a leaf on our Memory Tree in honour of your own much-loved companion, helping us continue to care for animals in need: rvcact.com/memorytree

It’s been one year since we officially opened the Transfusion Medicine Centre, a milestone made possible thanks to your support!

Since opening, the facility has transformed the way the Blood Donor team works. The team shared:

“Our work processes are now much smoother as we have a designated space for each task, a designated room for both feline and canine donors, and much needed necessary office space for the team's admin duties.

The separate feline and canine donor rooms have made a huge difference to our feline donors, as they are so much more relaxed, as we'd hoped they'd be; their room is at the back of the building and is nice and quiet with no throughflow, meaning there are limited interruptions now during their donations.

Our canine room is now much larger, and so there is more space for the dogs to feel settled, and the dogs have adapted well to the room change. We also have more workspaces throughout the building to perform lab tasks and for processing the blood for the hospital.“

Thanks to a kind legacy from Mrs Bastable, Roshaana was able to follow her dream of becoming a vet.

Mrs Bastable left a gift in her will in memory of her beloved Pekingese, Linkou, creating the Linkou Scholarship to support aspiring vets in their studies. One of those students was Roshaana Sivakumar, who says:

“The scholarship has truly made a huge difference to my life. It’s incredibly inspiring to know that someone out there believed in helping the future generations without ever meeting us.”

By leaving a gift in your will, you too can help future vets follow their dreams and shape the future of animal care. Learn how your legacy can make a lasting difference: rvcact.com/legacy

The RVC Exotics Service recently met Rodney, an orange-winged Amazon parrot, after his owners grew concerned about his behaviour. Rodney had become lethargic, was falling over, and had started clenching his feet.

Tests revealed changes in the blood vessels near his heart — signs of atherosclerosis, a condition often seen in older parrots. Using a cardiac ultrasound machine, funded by our supporters, clinicians were able to assess Rodney’s heart safely and without sedation.

Following treatment, Rodney is now much brighter, more active, and back to enjoying life with his family! You can read Rodney’s full story in the Autumn edition of Paws & Hooves: rvcact.com/PawsAndHoovesAutumn2025
