Today is National Draw a Bird Day! 🕊️🦅🐦🦜🐦‍⬛

In 1943, 7-year-old Dorie Cooper visited her wounded uncle in the hospital. To lift his spirits after losing a leg, she asked him to draw a bird for her. The activity brightened the ward, and the tradition was created to honor the joy she brought♥️

Enjoy some pictures of our fabulous birds that have been drawn! 🤩

We have had some very happy bunnies this week at SPPOT🐰🥕

The guys enjoyed a fun Easter egg hunt arranged by Erin and Adam. Everyone had to work as a team to figure out the clues and find all the eggs! 😀🥚

Have a lovely Easter Sunday, whether that means you'll be enjoying a yummy dinner, going on a spring walk or eating lots of chocolate! 🐣🌷🐰💛

Easter Games with your Dog

Your dog can't join Easter Egg Hunts but they love to hunt for food they can eat.

It's really good for them to do this too - it activates their natural behaviours and studies show that many prefer hunting for their food to being given it in a bowl.

You can use their own food, their favourite meat treats or other food they like - maybe carrots, broccoli, cored apples and hard boiled eggs (maybe not all in one day though, especially if your dog sleeps near you 😄)

Easter, just like Christmas, brings lots of chocolate into our homes.

Chocolate is poisonous to dogs because it contains theobromine, which dogs and some other animals struggle to metabolise.

The stronger the chocolate, the more poisonous it is. So dark chocolate is more dangerous than milk chocolate, but baking chocolate in supermarket cakes and so forth, is even more potent.

The symptoms of theobromine poisoning include vomiting, diarrhoea, excessive thirst, excitability, drooling and seizures.

However, by this stage, your dog's life is in severe danger, because it can cause renal and heart failure.

It is critical to understand that the effects of theobromine poisoning can take 4-24 hours to develop. So if you know your dog ate chocolate 2 hours ago and seems fine, doesn't mean they are - they could well be fighting for their life in a few more hours, so get to the vet straightaway.

Here's some advice for all homes with dogs and chocolate!

Chocolate is as appealing to dogs as people, once they get a taste for it, they'll go looking for it!

Don't allow your dog any human chocolate. We’ve met people who give their dog a little bit each day, but the truth is, it's not yet clear if there's a cumulative effect over time - so why risk it?

If you're setting up or hosting an Easter Egg hunt, keep your dog well away from the chocolate until it's all eaten or put away.

Know how many eggs are hidden and where and make sure they're all accounted for.

Make sure that bins are dog-proof.

Never leave chocolate unsupervised, remember things like cakes cooling in the kitchen, especially if your dog is large or athletic.

SPPOT - Supporting People & Pets through Opportunity & Training

SPPOT is a unique social enterprise offering dogs and their human families, a highly affordable, award winning dog walking service across Pembrokeshire and high quality daycare for dogs.

We are able to embed positive reward based training into our dog walking and daycare services, because all our staff and volunteers are themselves qualified and accredited in dog care, training and welfare.

SPPOT is an Agored Cymru Recognised Centre, delivering accredited training courses in canine training and welfare for adults and young people who experience barriers to work and education. This enables trainees to become part of SPPOT’s team as Volunteer Dog Walkers who walk dogs all over Pembrokeshire and K9 Keyworkers who volunteer their time at our dedicated headquarters in Haverfordwest providing high quality daycare for dogs.

The dog walking & daycare are offered at a competitive rates for the general public with a significant concession for vulnerable people in the community. Thus we can bring together the needs of two people, through shared care of a dog, benefiting both people and the dog. Dogs are scientifically proven to be of significant health and social benefit to people, therefore SPPOT’s progressive enterprise model will reduce dependence on health and social care services which are already under strain. People also have the capacity to reduce the suffering and neglect of dogs.
