We were shocked and saddened this morning to hear that Sarah Fisher had passed away. All day long our [dog training & behaviour] community has been pouring out it's collective heart on social media, so much so that it was difficult to find the words to express what she meant to me, my friends and colleagues in the profession, the dog training world and the people and animals in it. This post from Canine Principles explains the work Sarah did and difference she made, better than I can. If you want to read more, just search Facebook for her name.

Rest in peace Sarah, you were amazing and your legacy will live on at SPPOT and across the world for a very long time to come.

Some people change an industry not by being the loudest voice but by changing what everyone looks for.

Sarah Fisher did exactly this. We are devastated to hear she has passed 💔

Sarah taught us to notice the quiet things: posture, breath, tension, hesitation, curiosity. She reminded us that behaviour is communication, and that dogs need safety and agency before they can learn well.

Through ACE and previously through TTouch, Sarah’s influence reached far beyond dog training and into rescue, vet teams, grooming, therapy support, and everyday homes. Her work helped dogs feel safe enough to engage with the world, and helped humans become calmer, kinder observers.

Thinking of Sarah’s loved ones today and of the many people grieving across our community.

If you’re able, honour her by practicing what she modelled: slow down, watch, and let the dog lead ❤️

Sleep and rest is just as important as play, walks and training so we ensure the dogs have comfy beds, sofas and chairs they can access all day. Some love to share as you can see below🥹🐾

The armchair seems to be the favourite spot!😊

Happy Winter Solstice everyone, and thanks to Jenny at The GSD Hub for the canine perspective and the great graphic.

The winter solstice is here.

It is the shortest day of the year.

Darkness in the morning and darkness again by mid afternoon with only a narrow window of pale daylight in between.

The dogs feel it too, quick walks squeezed into the light, paws crunching on cold ground while the sun barely lifts itself above the horizon.

But this is the turning point.

From here on, the light slowly returns.

Each day brings a little more morning, a little more evening, almost unnoticed at first but steadily growing.

The dark has done its work and now we begin the quiet journey back towards longer days, brighter walks and the promise of spring waiting somewhere ahead❤️

What a December we've had at SPPOT, with our Christmas Party, the birth of beautiful baby Lyra to our wonderful dog trainer Caitlin and Amy becoming a full member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers UK.

We've also had unprecedented levels of staff sickness, like so many other workplaces and seemingly non stop rain and wind.

We've kept service cancellations to an absolute minimum, stayed open throughout, and kept everyone as warm and dry as possible.

A massive sleighful of gratitude and awe therefore, to our team members who have so far escaped the viruses, walked dogs in all kinds of dreadful weather, supported each other and our poorly folk at home and provided a great service for our daycare dogs too.

Despite being down to less than 50% staffing at times, everyone has pulled extra shifts, done the cleaning and the laundry, emptied the bins, fed the birds, sorted Christmas presents out, played fun games and kept everyone's spirits up.

Thank you everyone, you are amazing ❤️

Celebrating our newest member Amy Mullett (01718) of SPPOT, A Community Interest Company

“Short bio: I’m in the final year of my BSc (Hons) in Animal Health and Welfare. My dog training journey began during my second-year work-experience module, and I continued volunteering even after completing my required hours before being hired as an assistant dog trainer over a year ago. It has been hard work, but I’ve loved every minute of learning the craft and helping both dogs and their owners reach their potential.

I also have an 11-year old Springer Spaniel (pictured), who has been a key part of why I love training and bringing dogs and owners closer together.”

SPPOT - Supporting People & Pets through Opportunity & Training

SPPOT is a unique social enterprise offering dogs and their human families, a highly affordable, award winning dog walking service across Pembrokeshire and high quality daycare for dogs.

We are able to embed positive reward based training into our dog walking and daycare services, because all our staff and volunteers are themselves qualified and accredited in dog care, training and welfare.

SPPOT is an Agored Cymru Recognised Centre, delivering accredited training courses in canine training and welfare for adults and young people who experience barriers to work and education. This enables trainees to become part of SPPOT’s team as Volunteer Dog Walkers who walk dogs all over Pembrokeshire and K9 Keyworkers who volunteer their time at our dedicated headquarters in Haverfordwest providing high quality daycare for dogs.

The dog walking & daycare are offered at a competitive rates for the general public with a significant concession for vulnerable people in the community. Thus we can bring together the needs of two people, through shared care of a dog, benefiting both people and the dog. Dogs are scientifically proven to be of significant health and social benefit to people, therefore SPPOT’s progressive enterprise model will reduce dependence on health and social care services which are already under strain. People also have the capacity to reduce the suffering and neglect of dogs.
