It's Wednesday, and we've another turn under the spotlight - continuing our series where we share a little more about ‘Who We Are’.

Each post, we’ll be introducing you to one of the friendly faces you might see or speak to when you get in touch with us. From our team’s roles to their names and faces - you’ll get to know the people behind our name.

We’ll also share a bit of our history, what we stand for, and why we’re so passionate about providing care with compassion and respect in every moment. As an established, trusted and respected name in the funeral profession, we strive to deliver our ‘traditional values with a modern approach’.

So, whether you’ve known us for years or are just finding out who we are, we hope this series brings you closer to the people who make our work possible and allows you to get to know ‘Who We Are’.

We find ourselves in November now, and to start proceedings for Week 8, it's time for Zara Rhys Jones to be the star of the show...

We were lucky enough to have a member of Hospice in the Weald come and visit us, and after their visit, we received a lovely email of thanks.

Anyone is welcome to visit any of our premises, and we are proud of our care, our approach and our facilities.

Our door is always open.

The long life of a very much loved and respected lady was celebrated last week.

We had the privilege of taking the born and bred Burwash resident on her final journey, complete with her crash helmet proudly displayed on the coffin.

She was a lifelong motorbike enthusiast, attending her last motorbike show at the age of 95! Life goals!

Another amazing bonfire night courtesy of Heathfield District Bonfire Society. Great turn out. Clare Waterhouse manned the bar with Julian and Matthew Pennells to raise funds for the society and the drinks flowed all evening.

Mental health is more than a small part of our lives – it’s every moment of every day. Today, October 10th, is World Mental Health Day.

Mental health matters on the days when everything happens and the days when nothing happens. When life is busy and unpredictable, and when it’s quiet and ordinary too.
..That’s why we fight every day, to support more people tomorrow.

We are proud to be supporting The National Hygiene Bank's National Hygiene Week

One car repair. One lost job. One unexpected bill.

That’s all it takes for millions of UK adults to be pulled into hygiene poverty, and many of us are struggling with these stresses alone.

National Hygiene Week is taking place from 6th to 12th October 2025 to raise awareness about hygiene poverty.

Our Story

Heathfield Funeral Service is an independent, family-owned, funeral directors, based in the bustling market town of Heathfield. Since acquiring the business in 1991 our relationship with families throughout Sussex has been valued over many decades, with our care and attention to detail being renowned as being of the very highest quality.

On a daily basis Wendy Mitchell manages the Heathfield office. Dorothy, Tim, Jacky, Clare and Charles Waterhouse, supported by their loyal and experienced team, endeavour to provide traditional, bespoke and alternative funerals, reflecting not only the person who has died, but also with the key aim of exceeding the expectations of each family we care for.

As your Funeral Director we are here to help, guide and advise you in whatever way we can. We are dedicated to providing a personal service, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. With so much going on around you … so much to think about …. at such an incredibly difficult time, our role is to gently walk families through the different stages of arranging a funeral.
