Choose your cough syrup!

I've got three flavours this year:

🌿 Thyme & Liquorice - a very traditional mix, demulcent to soothe the throat and expectorant to hoist that crud up out of the lungs

πŸ’ Acerola Cherry & Echinacea - fruity and delicious, the easiest way to get immune-boosting echinacea into kids πŸ˜„ and packed with vitamin C

🌳 Wild Cherry Bark - for a dry, irritating cough, especially when it's disrupting sleep

Browse these and other cold & flu fighters in the shop every Wednesday 4-6pm, or message me to pick up another time

Did you know every part of the Rose plant is medicinal - the petals, hips, leaves, bark and root? And did you know that Rose has traditional and modern uses in every system of the body, from digestion to skin, from heart to kidneys? Real herbalism goes far beyond "x herb for x condition" - because even everyday herbs like Rose and Lavender contain thousands of chemical constituents which have multiple actions on the human body - learning to work with this complexity is what herbal medicine's all about πŸ•Έ

If this piques your interest do join us this Friday evening, 7-8.30pm for a cosy workshop exploring ways to work with Rose and Lavender to support your health and take care of those around you. Full price is £25 but do get in touch if you need a discounted place 😊 Sign up at HandsOnHebdenHerbs@gmail.com

These are MEDICINAL plants, acting on our nervous systems, digestion, immunity, inflammation, injuries... There's so much to learn and by deep diving on these two you'll leave with skills to help you explore other herbs in your own time πŸ“

Calendula brightening a gloomy October day. An absolute medicine cabinet in itself and easy to grow too - heals damage to skin & gut while being antimicrobial to both; contains antioxidant & antinflammatory carotenoids (obviously! Look at that πŸ₯•-y colour) including lutein for eye health; an important lymphatic... it ends up in some form in so many prescriptions.

And look at all the ways it appears in the shop:
🌼 Digestive Balance tea, Cleanse tea or plain old Calendula tea
🌼 Intensive Hand Cream, Avocado Body Butter, HyperCal ointment & Skin Calm cream
🌼 Herbal mouthwash
🌼 Calendula vinegar (helpful for thrush)
🌼 Anti-fungal cream & fungal nail liniment
🌼 Tincture (two different strengths)
🌼 Infused oil
🌼 Powder
Have I forgotten anything??

Latest in the shop: Calendula & St John's Wort balm made by Hebden's retired herbalist Sue Goodwin from her own garden 🌼

A classic first aid salve often called HyperCal for short (Hypericum being the latin name for St John's wort) - this what Sue says about it:

"Its uses are extensive as antiseptic and anti inflammatory agent. Minor wounds, cuts, grazes, puncture wounds, boils, burns - especially if painful. Also skin irritations - eczema, nappy rash, bedsores, chapped lips, cracked skin that won't heal (ie finger ends, feet). A great multipurpose salve."

A new favourite: Bryony. I was inspired to stock this herb for a tricky respiratory condition, and shortly afterwards spotted it in a Welsh hedgerow (it doesn't grow in Calderdale).

Now I'm deep diving on all its amazing properties - it's a very pokey herb, used in low doses for serious inflammatory conditions, absolutely not one to DIY! Also given that the root is the medicinal part and its habitat is dense mixed hedgerows, I can't imagine having the patience to harvest it. But look at those gorgeous traffic-light berries πŸ”΄πŸŸ πŸŸ’
