A Facebook post will never replace proper training, but hopefully this serves as a good reminder for you.

During my online and face to face sessions, this topic takes a good 20 mins to cover. And of course there is always lots of chat about how to keep our homes as safe as possible, and what to do if these 5 back blows do not work.

If you are worried about choking, please reach out and let me help replace your fears with first aid facts.

Has anyone met Mr Norovirus recently?

Norovirus is also known as the "winter vomiting bug".

He is fast, and more furious than ever at the moment.

One massive thing that we can do to reduce the spread and keep our homes as safe as possible is to wash our hands.

Wash them all the time. Wash them with warm water. Wash them for the time it takes to sing Happy Birthday. Wash them before meals. Wash them after the loo.

Yeah, yeah, yeah... we remember all of that stuff from Covid days!

BUT there is one BIG difference.

Hand gel or sanitiser will not kill Norovirus.

You need soap and water for this bad boy.

Oh, and also, make sure you make the bed with a fresh set of sheets underneath for the quick night time whip off 🤢🙈

"I do not do pool parties".

You may have seen some harrowing images of a mouldy Sophie doing their rounds on social media. Please have a read on how to keep your Sophie nice and clean.

(I have really made myself laugh with the last image... I think she is rocking the sunnies )

Know any Sophie lovers?

Christmas Safety alert... super strong and super nasty

Small powerful magnets.

Also known as neodymium or rare-earth magnets.

These guys are in the news again this morning with a 4 year old boy needing life-saving surgery 😞

If a child swallows these small balls, they can essentially burn holes in their intestines or bowel.

It is relatively easy to buy these toys online, often marketed at “desk toys” or fidget toys. Sometimes they carry a safety warning or a recommendation to say they are unsuitable for those under 14 years old, but others I have seen on Amazon or Etsy are quite blatantly aimed at toddlers.

Unfortunately accidents happen. But as parents, we just need to know this info. And once we are armed with all the correct information, we can then make the decision that is best for us and our family.

So, some top tips:
💪🏻 Make sure you know what your relatives are gifting your children for Christmas
💪🏼 Avoid these super strong magnets
💪🏼 Ensure any other magnets are too big to be able to fit into a child’s mouth
💪🏼 Check toys containing magnets for any wear and tear
💪🏼 If you suspect a swallowed magnet, seek urgent medical assistance
💪🏼 Our kids are never to young to be taught/ reminded/ told about the dangers of these magnets
💪🏼 Remember that just because you I can buy something online, it doesn’t always mean it is safe for children to play with

If you want some more info, check out www.capt.org.uk It is such a great resource for us to know about as parents.

Are you surprised by the dangers of these magnets? Or maybe surprised that you can still purchase these types of toys?!

Are you going to see some fireworks this weekend?

The British Burns Association say that the safest way to see fireworks is by attending an actual organised event. It's safe, run by experts, and fireworks are set off without the distraction of little ones running around excitedly. Don’t forget ear defenders for those sensitive ears!

If you are planning on having sparklers, here’s your reminder to have a dive in the fridge for a carrot. Popping the sparkler in a carrot makes it safer (and easier) to hold. And wearing a glove gives an extra layer of protection ✔️ (Have a swipe to see my reluctant son demonstrating this look)

If you are planning on celebrating tonight, head over to my stories for a link to my blog post about Bonfire Safety. It’s defo a good one to read to make sure you are keeping things as safe as possible.

Which is best for my child?

Under the arm is the best way to measure the temperature of babies 0-4 weeks old, so it’s essential that we have this type of thermometer at home when they are super little.

Once they get bigger, an “in the ear” infrared tympanic is great to use (as long as your technique is correct when measuring!).

What do you use at home? Which team are you?

More to come about “correct techniques” soon, but if you want to learn about this stuff (and much much more) in a friendly way, enrol now in my Baby First Aid digital course.

Despite the sad news this week, today remains World First Aid Day which is obviously totally my jam.

I thought long and hard about how I could sensitively post about this awareness day, given the magnitude of this week’s events.

Knowing what to do in case of an emergency could save a life. Or else it could decrease the severity of an injury, or prevent further harm from occurring. Only good things can come from knowing first aid.

One thing that is for sure- that learning these skills makes parenting seem a little less scary. When you know what to do if ever faced with the worst, it builds our resilience, our confidence. It reminds us that our kids are in safe hands when they are with us.

So I would like to dedicate this World First Aid Day to all the kick-arse, proactive parents who learn these skills.

This weekend is one for reflection. So please take a moment to reflect on how important it is that you have learnt these skills, and how awesome you are for prioritising this.

I will be sending you all the warm fuzzies from my heart to yours.

POP! Balloons are a choking risk.

Are you taking your little one to a party this weekend? Or maybe your house is a massive fan of a balloon as a bit of a boredom buster?

Here’s a reminder that a burst balloon is no one’s friend. If stuck in the airway, the small fragments of wafer-thin latex can be really really tricky to get up and out.

Babies and toddlers LOVE putting stuff in their mouths.

So to keep everyone safe, as soon as you hear a balloon go POP, pick up all the broken pieces and put it straight in the bin.

(In fact, the back of a packet of balloons says no unsupervised play under the age of 8!! Did you know this?!)

Happy weekend,

Having a BBQ this weekend?

Yep, you guessed it, it is important to teach our kids to stay away from the hot BBQ. BUT… we are all only human and sometimes accidents happen.

So as a contingency, here is a little reminder for you to help keep your kids safe. Make sure you have an area around the BBQ that the kids can’t “enter” to help decrease the chances of a burn. It might be an invisible area, but let it be known to the kids. In fact the recommend that 1 metre around the BBQ should be kiddy clear.

And, while you are there, throw a shrimp on for me 🦐
