Feel overwhelmed as we head towards Xmas deadline- love this illustration to remind us to 'shake it off' Thank you The Psychology Mum
An illustrated advent toolkit for your mind: Let’s shake it off.
The research says that often when we try to look after our wellbeing, or improve our lives, we try to do something extra or add something into our life. However research tells us that subtracting something from our life may have a more powerful effect and be more beneficial for our mind and lives.
This is particularly relevant at this time of year when the demands are high, the expectations are high, which means the cognitive load is high and often we are at full capacity.
So today in our no pressure illustrates advent for your mind, let’s think about something you can subtract from your life…..let’s shake it off to give you some mind space and capacity.
Before you shake it off, you may have to challenge your expectations of what you should be doing which drives your behaviour. You might want to gently question your ideas about what you need to do, what makes a good Christmas or what makes you the perfect parent, friend, sibling etc.
Often expectations of what we should be doing are pushed at us by commercials, magazine images, tv, films etc. To counteract this, You might want to also think about how you would bring Christmas back to what really matters, and make it align with your values (more in a future post to help with this).
So what can you subtract from your life this Christmas? It might be finding an alternative (pre cooked meal bunged in the oven anyone?) or dropping something altogether (Christmas Eve boxes? Elf poses? 1001 unnecessary presents?)
Let me know in the comments what you plan to shake off and subtract from your life, so we can think collectively together what could be subtracted from our own lives to reduce the load.
