Dr Braaksma explained why Vitamin D is important to keep bones strong and healthy. "We get vit D mainly from sunlight and a small amount comes from our diet. Food sources alone might not provide sufficient vit D during the winter months and therefore vit D supplements are recommended for everyone from October to March. Some people are at higher risk of vit D deficiency and they should take a supplement all year round (pregnant or breastfeeding, age under 5 or over 64, ethnic groups with dark skin, limited sun exposure, strict vegan or vegetarian diet). Public Health Scotland recommends a daily supplement containing 10mcg (400 iu) of vitamin D."
