I saw post this morning reflecting on ‘what is a positive birth?’ and it got my juices going…

I have done a lot of deliberating over this over the years.

Pre children my perfect birth was very focused on ‘achieving’ that intervention free water birth. 2 births down the line what I now realise is that, for me, a positive birth isn’t about HOW you birth, it’s about how you felt, how supported you were, did you feel informed, did you understand your options?

You can have a ‘perfect’ (on paper) spontaneous, intervention and complication free birth but can still feel very out of control or scared. Or you can birth completely differently to how you envisioned, potentially ending up with your ‘plan z’, but if you felt in control and informed, that can still be a really positive experience.

Antenatal education really is so important. Don’t just ‘see what happens’. It’s an experience that will stay with you forever.

Everyone deserves to come out of birth feeling bad ass- you just created and birthed a baby!

How do you reflect on your birth? And how do you feel your birth impacted on you postnatally?

These, now rare, sleepy cuddles feeling all the more poignant after having just read ‘a poem for your last baby’ 🥹

It doesn’t feel long ago that I was longing for this time when the physical and emotional demands of having tiny children would ease and I could start piecing parts of my life back together again, and yet, here we are and I would go back and do it all again tomorrow ❤️.

It’s a wild ride🎢

Whilst I am busy behind the scenes pulling together a website, I just wanted to say a wee hello 👋🏼 and do a little intro.

So HELLO- I’m Rachel.

I’m originally from the West Coast of Scotland, but have spent over a decade in Hertfordshire where I currently live with my Husband and our two girls.

I have 15 years of experience working in the NHS, caring for babies both in the neonatal unit and community, and of supporting new Mother’s and their families as they navigate their transition in to parenthood.

Having witnessed the difference the right support can have on postnatal experiences in my nursing career, I trained as a postnatal doula and now now offer flexible postnatal support to new or growing families with their newborns.

I believe that the postnatal period is a big deal, and that a woman’s experience of that time; how she is supported, how she feels both emotionally and physically and how informed she is, has the potential to shape those early parenting years and beyond.

I intend to keep building this little space to help build a picture of who I am and the support I can offer, but in the meantime, if you’d like to chat to find out more, I’d love to hear from you!

You can get me on hello@rbpostnatal.co.uk x

Finally a beautiful day here today, after what feels like weeks of rain and it has had me reminiscing about this time last year. Margot was days old and the weather was like this for nearly 2 weeks- crisp, blue skies and orange sunsets. I didn’t leave the house for 2 weeks (minus a midwife appointment).
I spent the majority of my time in this exact spot, hours spent staring at this new little being, trying to master breastfeeding, endless nappy changes, continually snacking, attempting to catch up with some sleep, crying at the magnitude of it all and bingeing Succession on Netflix 😅.

There was no expectation to be up and out, to be looking a certain way or to be hosting family or friends. Just us. All getting to know each other. It was a messy kind of wonderful.

Often we can’t see much past the birth when we are pregnant, all our focus is on just getting that babe in our arms. But it is so worth having a little think about what you want those precious few weeks to look like.

What boundaries or expectations do you need to set? What support do you think you might need or like?

New Beginnings 💫

A pivot in a direction that feels so obvious, that I can’t quite believe it has taken me so long to action 🙃.

This is the year it all comes together- the Nursing/ Health Visiting/ Mothering.

Excited to be available for postnatal support very soon my friends!

Some nights I resist it, some nights I relish it. But mostly I’m learning to soak it up, and enjoy being forced to bed early by my tiny little b**b barnacle.

Hypnobirthing and The R B Project

On the website now!

“In a nut shell, Hypnobirthing is an approach to birth/antenatal education which focuses on reframing the way we feel about birth.

It is about understanding your body, the birthing process, your mind and your choices, and provides you with the tools and techniques to facilitate a calm and positive birth experience.”

Which one would you prepare for most?

I’d argue that last one was fairly monumental!

Just saying.

Well that all got a little mental didn’t it?
Call me delusional, but I think I can see a little light? Just a smidge, but for the first time in 10 months it feels hopeful.

Pregnancy can be intense at the best of times, but throw in a global pandemic on top of growing a tiny human and it can all feel pretty heavy.

Take back the reins of what you can prepare for and scope out some time to focus on you and your baby.

Full antenatal courses, with Hypnobirthing at the core, running via zoom. DM me for more info.
