✨ “Learning to drive and passing my test (at the first attempt!) back in 2002 is undoubtedly one of the proudest achievements of my life.
Growing up, I always dreamed of being able to drive and travel independently, but having a significant physical disability and needing to use an electric wheelchair at all times made me doubt whether that dream could ever become a reality. When I was 18, I went to a place called the ‘Transport Research Laboratory’ in Berkshire, where they let me try out their wheelchair-accessible vehicles with different types of specialist adaptations to see what worked best for me. When they told me that I would be able to drive with these specialist adaptations I was very excited!
I applied to Motability for the necessary funding and when their grant was approved then SDL got to work on building my first van for me!
I have now been a client of SDL for more than 25 years and during that time I have had three adapted vans that I drive from my wheelchair with specialist hand and head controls. For each van, SDL has always built everything to fit around my wheelchair and me, ensuring that all of my controls are simple and straightforward for me to use. I love driving and use my van nearly every day – going to work, travelling around the UK and into Europe on overseas summer holidays. At the latest count, I have driven around 16 different countries in the UK and mainland Europe – including Spain, Czechia and Norway!
I will always be grateful to Grant, Niki and the wonderful team of engineers at SDL for elevating my quality of life by giving me the independence of being able to drive myself and allowing me to experience the joys of travel. It genuinely means more to me than I can properly put into words.
With the technology and equipment currently available, there is so much that SDL can do to help people with a wide range of abilities to drive and so I would strongly encourage you to give it a go! " ✨
