We have had such an amazing, and busy, first year helping children, young people, and adults work through whatever might be holding them back, with nature at the helm. Thank you to everyone who has supported us and helped us, and of course, all the lovely humans who have come through our doors for some guidence πŸ’š

Working with nature and people is an incredible honour, and to witness what happens to our stress levels when we are being held by our natural surroundings is so powerful.

We have allowed ourselves the time to take a break, and I can report it has been a fairly relaxing summer. However, we are very ready and really looking forward to opening our doors again in September.

P.S Like the new hair-do?

This image was captured last April, but I couldn't resist using it to explore our sense of touch.

There is something so magical about being able to feel something to understand what it is, and not just physically, but emotionally and intuitively feel them/it.

I often go out into the woods and touch the bark of a tree, the motion of rubbing my hand down the bark to feel the rough or smooth, the bumps and lumps, or the pattern that has been created. And, whilst touching the bark I try to connect with the tree - to feel its energy, to exchange energy.

There are so many different sensations on offer in nature, here are some that almost all of us have experienced:
β˜‘οΈ Stinging nettles
β˜‘οΈ Bramble
β˜‘οΈ Moss
β˜‘οΈ Leaves
β˜‘οΈ Mud
β˜‘οΈ Rain
β˜‘οΈ Wind
β˜‘οΈ Sun
β˜‘οΈ Cold
β˜‘οΈ Stones

Our sense of touch allows us to perceive the world around us through physical contact which allows us to experience different textures, temperatures, shapes, emotions (like hugs), risk.

I encourage you to go for a walk and allow yourself to touch everything that catches your attention. Really take your time to feel it. How does it make you feel?

Over the next few weeks we are going on a sensorial journey, and we are starting with our sense of smell (πŸ‘ƒ). Please do join us on this adventure, where we will learn how to come into connection with our bodies, and allow our busy minds to rest. And, if you don't have all your senses, that's fine, you can enjoy the heightened experience of your other senses.

Here we are enjoying the scent of rosemary. A beautiful plant that has so many benefits... even in winter.

The action of smelling enables a range of reactions in our bodies. When we find something that smells good, a message gets sent to our brain triggering a positive response, which helps us to feel happy and calm, it helps us with memory recall and concentration.

πŸ‘…Scent helps us to decide what to eat and influences our taste buds. What scent do you enjoy?

πŸ’‘ Smell helps us to make friends - did you know we tend to be drawn to others that smell like us?!

☠️ Our sense of smell warns us against hazardous products - if you smelt gas what would you do?

πŸ’ Some smells will enable us to recall a memory - maybe it's nan's cooking or mum's perfume, dad as he comes home from work... Notice what scents take you down memory lane.

Take a breath... Where does it lead you?

Our senses are incredibly important for our development and our wellbeing. And, what a treat to be able to use our senses in the rain!
We felt, listened, smelt, tasted and looked at the rain, in all its different forms. From rain drops to muddy puddles we explored all the different ways rain showed itself to us. Then we split into groups and made a creation out of whatever we could find - mostly mud! πŸ₯ΎπŸ’¦

As it gets colder and the days get shorter everything becomes a bit sleepier. Leaves start dropping and wildlife disappear ready for the big sleep πŸ’€

As sun started to set over head we went on a little adventure to explore what winter looks like in nature. We looked for signs of hibernating hedgehogs, we looked at the different colours and textures of fallen leaves and then had a story and hot chocolate around the fire πŸ”₯. What a great way to end a busy day.

Over the past 6 weeks our outdoor learning sessions have taken us to England, Italy, North East America, Algeria, Georgia and Venezuela. We have been choosing countries across the world and cooking a traditional dish, over an open fire, for our lunch. It's been the most delicious journey!

We cannot wait for the next half term - watch out for the next part of our culinary adventure πŸ˜‹

Wow what an experience!!

Giving a group of children tools to whittle their own marshmallow toasting stick... Trusting they will listen and respect the rules of using blades (and fire!) the right way.

It is invigorating watching children do something that would otherwise be known as 'scary' that will equip them with life skills for ever.
Predominantly, they learn to keep themselves safe and learn how to risk assess, for themselves. What's even more rewarding is seeing how they look after one-another when given the chance.
In outdoor situations it isn't about who 'looks the best' or who 'is the cleverest', it is about self-worth and positive social interaction.

*Spoiler alert
Put your trust in a child and they will eventually put their trust in you... Yes, it really is that simple!

**P.S Parents/adults don't worry you'll get your turn! We are soon releasing our adult only workshops for childish play πŸ˜‰

When left to their own devices in nature, children have the most creative imagination.

For example, take the girl in this photo, she made a 'hibernation salad'. She spent ages cutting up fallen apples and leaves, digging a hole and burying the salad for hibernating animals. When I asked her why she made this salad her words were "because I like helping animals, it's good to be nice". It certainly melted my heart πŸ’š

Maybe we all need a bit of this child's creativity and do something good for another being 🍁

Mushrooms: a sign of transformation.

Feeling like you're living in chaos and needing to let go. Autumn is the time to shed unwanted matter. Mushrooms appear amongst nutritious decay, perhaps symbolising a sign of new starts or transformation - out of the chaos comes clarity.

Autumn is a time to believe in the power of shedding the unwanted before moving into the dark Winter months where we can rest, recover and restore, before we begin to grow and transform.

Nature has a beautiful way of mirroring the process of letting go, as leaves change colour before floating to the ground and seeds falling from their mother's clutch to find a spot in the earth for the next stage of growth.

As we move into the autumn we can begin to reflect on the year and think about what we can harvest from our journey so far.

Below are a few questions that may prompt you, maybe you'd like to ponder your answers and see what emerges...

πŸ“ What served you well this year?
πŸ“ What are you prepared to let go of?
πŸ“ What needs your attention?
πŸ“ What can you hold on to in order to grow?
πŸ“ Where will your journey lead you?

If you would like some help on your journey please do get in touch, link in the bio.

Whether you're a child or an adult, grounding (under the canopy of a tree) has some superb calming effects on our body as we connect with earth's healing energy.

Want to know what is happening when you ground...
πŸ‘‚The senses engage
🫁 Breath freely
🧠 Calm your mind
πŸ§˜β€β™‚οΈ Connecting with your body
🫢 Reducing inflammation
🩸Improving blood flow
😴 Aiding better sleep
😊 Reduce stress levels

And, the list goes on, and on!

You don't need to spend hours practicing grounding, just a few minutes a day will make all the difference. It doesn't matter where you are, whether you're inside looking out, outside looking in, under a tree, or in a park, as long as it's quiet enough and you feel comfortable and calm, you will benefit from grounding yourself.
