Have you seen the recent news about LED masks and at-home skin devices? 👀
Here’s what you need to know before you buy one ⚠️
The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned several adverts for at-home LED masks after they made unauthorised medical claims such as “treats acne” or “reduces rosacea”. These products are not registered as medical equipment, which raises serious concerns about both safety and accuracy.
From my clinic experience, I am particularly concerned about how unsupervised light and heat exposure can trigger pigmentation flare-ups in those with melasma, darker skin tones, or heat-sensitive skin. I have seen patients come in with worsened discolouration after using home devices that were not suitable for their skin type.
My advice:
• Home devices can complement your routine but they are not a substitute for medical-grade treatments.
• Always check for FDA or MHRA approval and genuine clinical data.
• If you have pigmentation or an active skin condition, speak to a qualified medical professional before using any at-home device.
At Healthium Clinics, we use Dermalux, a medical-grade LED system that is clinically proven, FDA cleared, and safe for all skin types. It delivers real, measurable results under professional supervision.
