Why Elgar Care Understands Diabetes Better Than Most: A Personal Story from Our Director 💙

At Elgar Care, we don’t just support people living with diabetes — we understand them.

Our Director is a parent to three children with Type 1 diabetes, Milly, A-Jay and Lincoln and that lived experience shapes everything we do. From the early stages of recognising symptoms to the daily routines of insulin management, monitoring, and emotional support, diabetes is part of our family’s story — and now part of our company’s mission.

Our Insight Comes From Experience

Before each diagnosis, we noticed the same worrying signs:
• constant thirst
• sudden weight loss
• fatigue
• frequent toilet trips
• mood changes

Like many families, we didn’t know these were early signs of Type 1 diabetes. Each diagnosis taught us how important early recognition and informed support truly are.

This journey is the reason Elgar Care places such a strong focus on education, awareness, and compassionate care.

Because of this lived experience, Elgar Care offers something unique:

Milly who is also one of our care assistants has lived with Type 1 diabetes since she was 1 year old. She knows the signs and symptoms so well that she spotted them in both of her siblings and carried out a simple finger blood test which showed high blood sugar levels. Which meant both children were dignosed before becoming extremely unwell.

In my work with Elgar Care, I’ve seen how many people still struggle to recognise the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Both conditions deserve understanding and support, but they are not the same:

Type 1 Diabetes
• Autoimmune
• Sudden onset
• Often in children or young adults
• Must have insulin from diagnosis
• Not linked to lifestyle

Type 2 Diabetes
• Insulin resistance
• Usually gradual onset
• Often adults, but increasingly in young people
• Managed with lifestyle changes, tablets, and sometimes insulin
• Can be influenced by genetic and lifestyle factors

At Elgar Care, diabetes awareness isn’t just part of our training —
it’s part of who we are.

We will be rolling out Type 1 lived experience training plus our Sophie and Lisa have had all of their diabetes training including diabetes technology, burnout, Type 2 diabetes, emotional plus many more to run alongside for our Care staff.
