Amber Turnell Coaching One-to-one coaching and counselling. Stress-buster workshops for businesses and individuals via video conferencing, phone (07956 988173) or email.

amber@amberturnellcoaching.com I started my counselling career fifteen years ago in hospice care, supporting patients approaching end of life - working both 'on the ward' and in the community. As well as helping their families to manage the complex emotions that arose. I have been privileged to have worked in these specialist settings alongside incredible staff and this led me to gain a qualification in supervision. It has enabled me to focus on staff welfare and have been able to offer support to medical staff and emergency services staff in encouraging them in caring for themselves. Working with Kent Police in the Counselling & Well-being team, I was involved in the design and development of an award-winning psycho-educational well-being programme - currently used by both front-line and civilian staff. Helping them to cope with the inherent anxiety, stress and trauma that they face in their roles. I will work with you to look clearly at everything you may be facing and the impact it might be having on your mental health and general wellbeing. I can help you to gain a greater understanding of your thoughts and I can assist you in finding (and implementing) strategies to deal with whatever life throws at you.

Some wish to focus on a specific life event - a bereavement, sudden diagnosis of an illness or a particular distress that they may be facing. For example, low mood/depression, work related stress or symptoms of general anxiety. For others it may be a chance to gain insight into why they feel as they do or to understand changes they may have been considering. Both coaching and counselling provide an opportunity to explore, make sense and take control of what is happening in your life. I am fully insured and registered as a counsellor with the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) and I am bound by its ethical framework for good practice in counselling and psychotherapy. If you would like to find out more about me or to arrange a no obligation assessment, please feel free to get in touch by phone (07956988173) or through this page.

From the 10th to the 16th May it is Mental Health Awareness Week in the UK.
A definition of 'Mental Health' -'a person’s condition with regard to their psychological and emotional well-being'

How is your mental health as we come out of lockdown ?
Use this opportunity to pause and reflect on how you are doing and take the risk by telling someone how you are feeling.

This year's theme is nature and the environment. During the lockdown many have not been out of the house for months and therefore their mental and physical wellbeing has suffered.
Make a start today to enhance your wellbeing by being out in nature. Just a few minutes each day out in the fresh air will have a positive impact on your mental and physical health .

'Spending time in green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing. Mind.org.uk

Looking for Direction?

During lockdown many people have become 'content' and have had an element of safety being and working from home. Things are changing, slowly for some and too fast for others.
Are you struggling psychologically ? Do you want to make some changes but dont know where to begin.
Having choices now may feel daunting as simple decisions that you have coped with well in the past may feel overwhelming.
Not everyone needs to commit to long term therapy but what could be a helpful start is having a 'life review' post lockdown.

Just a couple of sessions, in a safe envrionment to talk about YOUR feelings and look at your options in a supportive space can be all you need.
You can gain perspective, have time to reflect on what comes up in the session and then you have have an idea of what your options are.

Book a session to have a review of YOUR life. Looking at areas that you might want to focus on or change.
Get some direction.

Loss and Bereavement

The death of Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh has been felt by many. The outpouring of grief can bring up a variety of emotions for some as over the course of the past year many have experienced some form of loss.
Loss of freedom, relationships, income, work, or a bereavement. Emotions connected from the past losses in your life could come up and cause distress now.
Anger, relief, guilt, frustration, isolation, despair are just a some of the emotions that could arise.
Learning to live with the loss of someone can take a long time and as each person feels differently as time passes. Loss and grief are unique to each person, even individual family members.
People may say ‘I know how YOU feel’ or ‘that happened to ME’. They mean well and are trying to offer support, but they are speaking about their emotions at that moment as no one can really know how YOU feel.
It was your unique connection to that person. It may have been a happy fulfilling relationship or a complex difficult one. Therefore, the loss brings up different emotions for different reasons.

Relationships within families can sometimes be strained as each person has their own personal story and attachment to the departed. Grief is so individual. It is YOUR ‘story’. YOUR connection. It can never be the same as another’s.

If you are experiencing difficulty and need support make contact for a free 20 minute assessment of your needs.

Reflection time gives the brain an opportunity to pause amidst the chaos. It allows it to have the time and space and ‘make sense’ of, get some insight about experiences and gain some clarity.
Taking the time to reflect on situations and issues in your life is important rather than continue in 'autopilot' to make any change.

Have you become aware of areas in your life that you would like to address when life returns to some sort of ‘normality’?
Will you return to your old ‘normal’ or is there something else YOU would like to do for YOU?
Do you feel like you are on a treadmill and life is passing you by?

Acceptance Commitment Therapy helps to define YOUR values and introduces an awareness of situations in your life where change may be possible.
Make contact to book an initial session for a life review assessment which could help you identify what areas you could focus on.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)

The lifting of restrictions this week continues to bring about feelings of excitement and relief, but for others anxiety has been higher. Socialising, after isolating for months can now be perceived as a threat dependant on your thinking.
When you do not have enough information about a situation or have uncertainty due to any change the brain automatically ‘switches’ to the limbic, survival part of the brain.
The Automatic Nervous System tries to risk assess this new ‘unknown’ situation you are in to check for danger and triggers the stress response with the sole objective of keeping you alive.

Mindfulness exercises can help you emotionally and physically. Regular practice can increase the oxytocin levels in the brain which reduces the impact of unhealthy stress levels.

'Mindfulness is frequently used in meditation and certain kinds of therapy. Its benefits include lowering stress levels, reducing harmful ruminating, and protecting against depression and anxiety. Research even suggests that mindfulness can help people better cope with rejection and social isolation'

Are YOU feeling anxious, stressed, having trouble sleeping or are your worrying thoughts impacting on your wellbeing ? Get in touch and book in to experience a mindfulness session to manage these difficulties.

National Day of Reflection, on 23rd March 2021 was organised by the charity Marie Curie is to mark one year since the UK first went into lockdown.
"This annual day will give us all time to pause and think about this unprecedented loss we're facing and support each other through grief in the years to come."

The idea is for everyone to come together to collectively reflect on the past year and support those who have been bereaved or suffered loss of any kind during this difficult year.
Take time today to pause and reflect on the impact on your life over this past year.

Talking through your feelings of loss takes courage. Today may be the day you decide to speak to someone you can trust or a professional so you can start to make sense of the impact of the loss to YOU.

Grief is personal and the impact is individual to each person whether the loss has been recent or from the past..
There is support for you whatever your loss.

21/03/2021

Restrictions are starting to be lifted and many businesses are planning to reopen soon. Shops, hairdressers, gyms and outdoor hospitality could reopen on 12 April in England under plans set out by the government.
Whilst many have been eagerly awaiting this change, excited and already talking and planning social events. Some despite wanting to get back to some 'normality’ are starting to experience heightened anxiety about these changes as the country gradually reopens as the threat of the virus is still there.

How do YOU feel about these changes?
Have you thought about what boundaries you would like to put in place when meeting others? Is there a difference of opinion with family and friends? Are you feeling under pressure ?

Do YOU tend to put other people’s feelings before your own?

Being clear about what you want and verbalising this ahead of time will cause less confusion, stress, upset and awkwardness.
If people are not made aware then they cannot respect your feelings and it will make a difficult situation feel even more uncomfortable.

Have you discussed this with anyone? Maybe now is the time to
verbalise your fears. Call for a free 20 minute asessment.

Over this past year many frontline workers have had to keep going to meet the demands placed on them to provide a service.
They continue to care for others despite feeling physically and emotionally drained.

When demands are greater than resources over a long period of time stress levels increase and many are not aware of the signals and may be suffering from compassion fatigue.

Have YOU found yourself constantly giving of yourself, emotionally and physically offering care and empathy to others but are feeling exhausted and depleted of energy?
Recognising the signs and protecting yourself from emotional and physical ‘burnout’ is especially important.

Do YOU feel emotional, irritable, angry, isolated, have physical pain, trouble concentrating or suffer from bouts of insomnia ? These could be some signs that you are experiencing compassion fatigue.
Get help and support for YOU and find ways to care for yourself whilst you continue to care for others.

From today children, teachers, parents and many others across the country are going back to school or to work. This will naturally bring up a variety of emotions.
Many will be happy and excited about the return to a more ‘normal’ routine, but for some who have felt safer and been more comfortable at home these changes can be hard to manage.
After being asked to stay at home for so long, this is an extremely natural reaction.

How do YOU deal with change?

If you are recognising that your thoughts and emotions are overwhelming you and are feeling under pressure and more anxious then get in touch for support in developing healthy coping strategies.

It is completely understandable to feel vulnerable and uncertain about how to be when we meet up with people that are close to us and have not seen for a while.

We have a natural instinct from birth to reach out for the human touch and we have not been able to do that for a long time.
The government have introduced a timeline of the restrictions being lifted in stages and this may trigger some fears despite the longing to see and be close to relatives and friends.

The body's unconscious craves that contact but due to living with the fear of the virus for so long the brain has become more wary and will be sending signals that it is dangerous. There is often a conflict and the ‘fight -flight’ survival response is triggered.

Are YOU starting to get anxious when just thinking about socialising or even returning to work?
Get in touch for support and advice on how to manage the stress and develop strategies to cope better.

20/02/2021

Alcohol is easily and widely available in this country and during the pandemic many have got into the habit of drinking as a way of relaxing or coping with pressures of the lockdown and isolation.

It can be difficult to recognise when alcohol consumption becomes a problem. Emotions run high when under the influence of alcohol and relationships can suffer.

Have you become secretive about how much you are relying on alcohol to get you through?

Prior to lockdown, did you enjoy having a few drinks socially but now it’s become a necessity or an unhealthy habit?

It is important to take notice and look out for the warning signs.

www.nhs.uk/live-well/alcohol-support/

If you are aware that someone you know appears to have an addiction to alcohol or you have noticed that their drinking is excessive, offer help in a gentle supportive way and seek professional advice together.

Early intervention can be very effective.
