Wether you are some way in to your feeding journey, or pregnant and thinking about how you want to feed your baby, pop along and ask any questions. Register at http://www.Motherfit.co.uk (free) and I’ll see you tonight!!

🤱🏾 Black Breastfeeding Week 2023 🤱🏾

This year's theme celebrates connection and our communities.

And why do we need a Black Breastfeeding Week? Soooo many reasons, but here are just 2 for you to think about…

(1) Black babies are more than twice as likely to die than white babies. With all of its protective qualities, it is estimated that breastfeeding could reduce this mortality rate by 50%

(2) There is a massive lack of diversity in the field of Lactation support. Even when well intentioned, support is not necessarily culturally sensitive or competent, leaving it less accessible and effective.

Reflux is just the name given to stomach contents coming up and out of the stomach. Sometimes people wanting to help can be quick to recommend medication… but is it necessary? It’s important to find out WHY your baby has reflux before working on resolving it.

A baby with reflux not gaining weight well should always be thoroughly assessed for feeding challenges.

For a baby gaining weight well, often this reflux/spit up is simply excess intake coming out to make things comfier for baby. Often latc, feeding positions and regulating supply can make a big difference. Sometimes holding baby upright after feeds and/or, inclining rest surfaces gently can help. Occasionally it can be down to tongue restrictions or allergy or intolerance. Often it’s a combination of some of these things.

Finding skilled support can help you work through possible causes for your baby and then to make some steps to help your baby reduce their reflux.

No need to say anything else. The wonderful accounts who made and posted this first say it all!
Posted • Just wanted this fixed here for eternity 👆🏻(via ; written by ).

And to be clear this is no man-bashing exercise .farquharson knows that.

But the domestic load is real. The burden of childcare is still strapped firmly to female shoulders. (Don’t get me wrong I blimmin’ love my kids but this is about equality and choice).

If sole parental caregivers were given a salary it’s estimated at £146,000 pa*. You’re a chauffeur, chef, party planner, personal assistant, hair stylist, counsellor and the rest.

Just because society doesn’t value parenting doesn’t mean it doesn’t count. Doesn’t mean my career doesn’t count; that we don’t count.

I feel I’m owed something SIGNIFICANT after enduring Topsy & Tim on repeat for eight years.

One day I will find time to train as a holistic sleep consultant…
Posted • Babies do not need to be trained how to sleep. Sleep is biological. It is one of 6 states of alertness. Sleep works in cycles between deep sleep & light sleep. During light sleep babies often rouse to a quiet alert state or a fussy state. They often need help to navigate these changes of state. Some are able to transition between states more smoothly than others; it is likely partly to do with personality & partly genetic.

Being able to transition between states is a developmental stage like walking & talking – babies do it when they are ready and not before! When babies are learning lots of new things or are in new environments, they often need more support to settle.⁣

"Sleep training" does not train a baby to sleep, it trains them not to ask for help. It works by taking away a response & expecting the baby to be able to regulate between awake and sleep states by themselves. They are often not developmentally capable of doing this & cry out. If crying doesn't bring the help they need they eventually shut down & stop asking. This is called an extinction technique. But this may damage secure attachment & bonding. Research shows that a child who is securely attached to their primary caregiver will be more emotionally stable in later life; it fosters good mental health.⁣

Holistic sleep coaching is not sleep training. It teaches parents about biologically normal & age-appropriate sleep, & how babies can transition from one state to another. It supports parents to be responsive whilst making small, gentle changes that protect strong attachment but maximise their babies' natural potential to sleep in an age-appropriate way. Holistic Sleep Coaching is individualised to each family as each situation is unique. It also protects the breastfeeding & bedsharing relationship, which are both the biological norm. If parents wish to move away from these practices, then gentle transitions and alternatives can be suggested. But it also acknowledges that saying "this too shall pass" is not helpful for a sleep deprived parent who is struggling to function.⁣

Posted • Day 2 of National Breastfeeding Week 2022.
"The UK has some of the lowest breastfeeding rates in the world, and the health and wellbeing of mothers and children are suffering".
calls UK governments to take four key steps to enable mothers to breastfeed for as long as they wish and to protect all babies from commercial interests.
#1 Develop a National Infant Feeding Strategy Board.
#2 Promote, protect and support breastfeeding in all policy areas.
#3 Implement evidence-based initiatives
#4 Protect babies and their families from harmful commercial interest.

What an honour to be invited to 6WeekSocial - Postnatal Course] yesterday to talk to the lovely group of mums about their feeding concerns. With babies from 6 weeks to 5 months, breast and bottle feeding, there was a lot to talk about!!!

Luckily I can talk about infant feeding for hours… possibly days.

Thank you to 6WeekSocial - Postnatal Course] for this lovely post that I have stolen/reposted 🥰 Do check out their courses across Hertfordshire ❤️

Anyone for a knitted b**b? What about a knitted nappy to show colour differences in baby’s poo? No?

Both these fine samples were made by the very experienced and skilled hands of Heidi Hembry of .

Heidi was our delightfully humorous host today at our Hertford course. With 14 years experience under her belt working for both the NHS and privately, Heidi answered questions and advised our mums on their breastfeeding concerns, fast let down, how to start introducing a bottle, reflux, and so much more. She’s a fountain of knowledge and experience always delivered with a smile…and a knitted b**b!

We have four more sessions of Positive Postnatal before summer and it’s with a heavy heart that we are announcing we won’t be returning in September this year. We have loved running these sessions for our local families and we know from your feedback how valuable you have found them. However, we needed to make some major changes to ensure our sessions could be accessible to all, and sustainable in the longer term, and at present this leap is just too big for us to make.

Our next 3 sessions (27th June, 4th & 11th of July) will remain as support sessions for mums and babies under 6months. However, our last session on 18th July will be open to anyone who has used our services before as a celebration of all we - and more importantly, YOU - have achieved.

Bookings for each week taken up to 7 days in advance.
