Complementary Therapy takes us back to our roots…
Where did complementary therapy begin?
For centuries—long before modern medicine—cultures across the world turned to natural remedies, movement, and holistic practices to restore health and balance. What we now call complementary therapy has roots stretching back thousands of years:
-Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) — acupuncture and herbal remedies used for over 2,500 years to balance the flow of energy (Qi).
- Ayurveda (India) — a 3,000-year-old system combining diet, herbs, yoga, and meditation to promote harmony of mind, body, and spirit.
-Ancient Greece — Hippocrates, the “Father of Medicine,” advocated massage, nutrition, and hydrotherapy as part of healing.
- Indigenous traditions worldwide — healing rituals, plant medicines, and energy-based practices deeply connected to nature and community.
Today, complementary therapies are often integrated with conventional healthcare—supporting patients not just physically, but emotionally and mentally. From acupuncture and massage to counselling, Reiki, and nutritional therapy, these approaches aim to treat the whole person, not just the symptom.
At The Southdown Clinic, we honour these rich traditions while combining them with modern medical insight—helping clients find balance, resilience, and wellbeing in ways that feel personal and sustainable.
