When referring to food, bioavailability means the degree to which nutrients in a food source are absorbed and utilised by the body after eating.

Many things can affect the bioavailability of ingredients. Their chemical form (and therefore their quality), interactions with other components of the meal and physiological responses within the body are some of the key factors.

The dog evolved in a time when food was simple relative to today. Ingredients were in their whole-food forms and processing was minimal to non-existent. Dogs’ bodies are therefore equipped to thrive on these simple ingredients. These types of foods are the most highly bioavailable things you can feed to your dog, meaning they will be able to absorb and utilise them most efficiently and produce the least amount of waste (always a bonus 💩).

Look at the ingredients list on your dog’s food. If the list is long and complex, containing chemical names you don’t recognise and reams of nutritional additives, this suggests it has been subjected to ultra-processing, meaning the chemical form of the ingredients will no longer be their optimal, most bioavailable state. If fed over a long period of time, these low-bioavailability ingredients can start to impact your dog’s gut microbiome and unpleasant symptoms may begin to show such as itchiness, hotspots, ear irritation, inflamed a**l glands and frequent upset tummies.

If you are concerned about your dog’s diet and how it may be affecting them, send us a message today - we’re here to help 🤝

The microbiome is the ecosystem of microorganisms/microbes that live naturally in the gut. When the balance is right, pathogenic (disease-causing) microbe numbers are kept under control by high numbers of beneficial microbes. If there is an imbalance (known as dysbiosis), which can be caused by many factors including, but not limited to, stress, infection, toxins (for example, regular ingestion of moulds), certain medications or regular ingestion of ultra-processed ingredients, the gut environment can change and become favourable to the pathogenic microbes. They begin to increase in number and crowd out the beneficial microbes. Over time, if this is not addressed, the above symptoms can begin to show up.

The good news is that we can help you rebalance your dog’s gut microbiome. It takes dedication from you as your dog’s guardian, but it is very possible as our many previous clients will attest to!

Contact us today if your dog is struggling with any of these symptoms ☺️

We have had a few clients recently who have told us they were reluctant to make contact with a canine nutritionist for fear of being judged on their feeding choices or for not knowing enough about their dog’s nutritional needs.

At Peak Dog Nutrition, we know that if you are contacting us, you already care hugely about the wellbeing and health of your dog. We are all only human and can only work with the knowledge we have at any given time. There is no shame in knowing less about canine nutrition than a canine nutritionist - it is the reason we do what we do!

If you come to us, we will help you to understand which parts of your dog’s diet work well for them and which parts may not. We will advise on any changes you may need to make and we will support you as you make them. We will never judge you on your choices or force a particular type of feeding. Any changes must work for both you and your dog.

Hopefully this puts some minds at ease ☺️

A huge thank you to Ria, Nam and their beloved Yoshi for leaving this lovely review. Yoshi’s journey continues with the help of Dr Carol Hughes from Biome4Pets, but he has made huge improvements during our time working together over the last 12 weeks. He is extremely lucky to have such caring and conscientious owners in Ria and Nam ☺️

Dogs have evolved to thrive in an environment where food was often scarce. Their body physiology reflects this. There are coping mechanisms in place throughout their bodies which keep them from slipping into nutritional deficiencies and starvation. For example, the number of hormones they possess for raising blood sugar far exceeds the number they have for lowering it.

We’re not saying that you shouldn’t feed your dog a balanced diet with that contains all their required nutrients, but we are saying that our modern culture of excess is affecting our dogs’ long-term health.

Feeding a diet that is biologically appropriate, and closer to the diet they have evolved to thrive on will have positive effects on their health-span
