Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common digestive issue that many people face. It occurs when the contents of the stomach flow back up into the esophagus, which is the tube connecting your throat to your stomach. This happens because the lower esophageal sphincter, a muscle that normally keeps the stomach contents where they belong, does not work properly. As a result, stomach acid and partially digested food can irritate the esophagus, leading to inflammation.
The most recognizable symptom of GERD is heartburn. You may feel a burning sensation in your chest, especially after eating or when lying down. Along with heartburn, you might notice a sour or bitter taste in your mouth, have trouble swallowing, or experience a persistent cough. Some people may even regurgitate, which means that food or liquid comes back up into the throat or mouth.
GERD is considered a medical condition when symptoms occur frequently—more than twice a week—or when it leads to other problems like esophagitis (inflammation of the esophagus), esophageal stricture (narrowing of the esophagus), or Barrett's esophagus, which can involve changes to the esophagus that raise cancer risk. These complications can significantly impact quality of life and may require medical attention, so it is important to seek help if you experience these symptoms regularly.
