❤️ February is Heart Month ❤️

Looking after your heart doesn’t have to be complicated — small, steady steps really do add up.

Regular physical activity is one of the best ways to protect your heart. It’s important to start slowly, build gradually, and choose activities that suit your ability, especially if you’re new to exercise or returning after a break.

🚶‍♀️ Heart-healthy activities include:

Walking

Swimming

Stretching or yoga

Chair-based exercises

Gentle strength and balance work

Remember: it’s about practice, not perfection.

❤️ Simple ways to care for your heart:

Stay active – even a daily walk helps

Eat a balanced diet with plenty of fruit and vegetables

Stop smoking and reduce alcohol intake

Manage stress and prioritise good sleep

Attend health checks when invited

💊 How your GP surgery and community pharmacy can help
Working together, your local GP and pharmacy can support your heart health through:

Blood pressure checks

Advice on cholesterol and heart-healthy lifestyles

Medication reviews and support

Guidance on safe exercise, especially if you have long-term conditions

📍 Pharmacy First
Your community pharmacist is often a great first point of contact — no appointment needed — for advice about medications, heart health, and starting exercise safely.

⚠️ If you experience symptoms such as chest pain, breathlessness, dizziness, or feel unwell, please contact your GP surgery or seek urgent medical care.

This Heart Month, let’s take positive steps — for ourselves and for each other ❤️

🌍 World Cancer Day – 4 February 🌍

World Cancer Day is a global campaign to raise awareness of cancer, encourage prevention, early detection, and remind everyone that each cancer journey is unique.

🧡 Know your body. Notice changes.
Finding cancer early can make a real difference. That’s why it’s important to be aware of what’s normal for you and to take notice of any changes, such as:

-New lumps

-Unexplained weight loss

-Changes in bowel habits

-Persistent pain, cough, or fatigue

-Changes to skin, moles, or bleeding

🔍 Don’t ignore symptoms or put off checks
Most changes won’t be cancer, but if something doesn’t feel right, it’s always better to get it checked.

👩‍⚕️ When to speak to your GP
If you’re worried about a symptom, please contact Hughenden Valley Surgeries. Our team is here to listen, assess your concerns, and support you. You will never be wasting our time.

🤝 United in our goals, unique in our needs
World Cancer Day reminds us that compassion, awareness, and early action matter — for ourselves and for each other.

If you’re concerned, book an appointment with your GP. Early advice can provide reassurance or help get the right care started sooner.
