A thought during Mental Health Awareness Week……”The past is the past and can’t be changed so leave it behind otherwise it will destroy your future. You can influence what you do today and tomorrow - so live for everything today has to offer, not for what yesterday has taken away.”

Fascinating facts about the positive impact of investing in employee wellbeing on productivity…..
The Times last week reported on a new survey indicating half of Britain’s manufacturers increased their spending on staff health and wellbeing since the start of the pandemic. More than a quarter are holding regular events to increase morale with almost a half holding regular calls with employees to keep an eye on their mental health.
• 25% of companies said productivity had gone up.
• 20% saw a reduction in absenteeism.
• 16% saw an increase in staff retention.
If employees are looked after, absenteeism and attrition drop, they stay in the job for longer and both productivity and loyalty to the organisation improve.
With this data focused on employees in manufacturing, I’m wondering if there is any reason why these benefits would not be seen in all other business sectors?

PEACE OF MIND
Having your mobile hacked drives stress to intolerable levels and normal calmness can turn to panic.
WhatsApp on your mobile may be open to hacking because the group settings include “everyone” so people unknown to you (e.g. hackers and scammers) can add you to a group without your knowledge.
However in just 1 minute you can restrict WhatsApp access to just YOUR CONTACTS......and here is how to do it.
1) Open WhatsApp and go into Settings
2)Go to Account
3) Go to Privacy
4) Go to Groups
5) Change from “Everyone” to “My Contacts”
You may want to similarly change the other Privacy settings.
So for that all important PEACE OF MIND, check your WhatsApp settings now and share this with your friends.

Taking a break improves the rest of your day…….
Mental Health Awareness week is focusing this year on the benefits from using our senses to connect with nature. This may be challenging if you are driving to work or on a train or working in a town.
However you’ll boost your own mental health by finding 20 minutes at lunchtime to “drop work” and getting into open space outside to consciously focus on:
• Noticing the air that you’re breathing
• Listening to birdsong
• Looking for movement – clouds, birds, bees and butterflies
By making this part of our daily activity, we allow ourselves time to enjoy the sense of calm and our mood to lift. Afternoon and evening challenges also become easier to deal with.

The fifth of this series of 5 Stress Busters is to REWARD YOURSELF. This is about giving time to YOU to re-energise yourself.
So at the end of a stressful day……
1) Enjoy a good book for half an hour or take a relaxing bath.
2) Allow yourself to relax by putting personal, family and work concerns to one side for a little while before going to bed.
3) Try not to plan for tomorrow or beat yourself up for the things that didn’t get done today.
4) Avoid looking at mobile and tablet devices for at least one hour before sleep.
You’ll feel calmer, sleep more easily and be better able to face tomorrow’s challenges. More details at mindknowhow.co.uk. Please share if you feel this will be helpful for others.

The fourth of this series of 5 Stress Busters is REGULAR EXERCISE. Even 5 minute breaks to walk or stretch will feel empowering and raise spirits. Exercise decreases levels of stress hormones in our bodies and increases endorphins which elevate our mood at the same time.
So next time you’re feeling stressed, allow yourself to enjoy some exercise as a welcome distraction and feel the exhilaration and relaxation it brings.

The third of this series of 5 Stress Busters is to SPEAK MORE SLOWLY. Have you noticed that when others are upset and angry, they speak quickly with short breaths and their voice pitch rises. So next time you find yourself in this situation, do the opposite……
1) Pause. Wait 2 or 3 seconds before responding. This gives you time to think.
2) Slow your speech down.
3) Keep tone of voice normal.
Sense your own stress level dropping and how you are feeling more in control. The situation you’re in also becomes easier to deal with. More details at mindknowhow.co.uk. Please share if you feel this will be helpful for others.

The second of this series of 5 Stress Busters is LETTING GO. We all get annoyed at times over trivial things. Negative feelings build up causing tension and frustration and we become angry. So next time you feel this happening…….
1) Sit down where safe and close your eyes.
2) Drop into your body and just sense how the stress feels. Recognise what you are saying to yourself about it and feel the associated negativity.
3) Let it go completely. Refuse to allow the issue to use up your personal energy. Sense the peace you are experiencing from your conscious decision not to become upset or angry.
4) Open your eyes again.
Whilst the problem hasn’t gone away, you’ll feel calmer and better able to deal with it. More details at mindknowhow.co.uk. Please share if you feel this will be helpful for others.

The first of this series of 5 Stress Busters is to BREATHE SLOWLY AND DEEPLY. We all know our stress triggers. They make us feel uptight and edgy, even anxious. So next time you feel this happening……
1) Sit or lie down in a quiet place.
2) Close your eyes.
3) Count to 4 as you take a slow, deep breath in through your nose.
4) Hold your breath and count to 3.
5) Then count to 7 as you breathe out slowly and fully.
6) Repeat this 4/3/7 technique for a few minutes and then open your eyes again.
Enjoy the inner calmness you’re feeling and just let it build. More details at mindknowhow.co.uk. Please share if you feel this will be helpful for others.
