🌟 Mixed Sensory Profile 🌟

To finish our sensory profiles series, here’s the Mixed Sensory Profile - a very common presentation πŸ’›

A person may be hyperresponsive in one sensory area and hyporesponsive in another. This can also change day to day depending on many other factors which influence our 'window of tolerance'. How much sleep we've had, whether we are hungry, poorly or excited about something can influence our sensory systems massively and alter how we may respond to certain situations!

This doesn’t mean they’re inconsistent, it simply means each sense processes input differently.

A mixed profile might look like:

✨ Seeking rough play but avoiding sticky hands
✨ Loving spinning but disliking swings
✨ Chewing sleeves but disliking unexpected touch
✨ Seeking hugs but covering ears for loud noise
✨ Running and crashing but avoiding walking barefoot

Understanding these patterns helps us reduce stress and support regulation across home, school and work.

Thank you for following this week’s series πŸ’›

If you feel you would benefit from support in understanding your child’s sensory patterns at home, at school or both, please contact Petals Therapy and we can discuss what options may suit your child’s needs.

Today we’re exploring the Sensory Seeker – Child Style 🧑

These children often have a hyporesponsive sensory system, meaning they naturally look for more sensory input to stay regulated and engaged.

You might notice they:

✨ Run, jump, climb and spin
✨ Chew clothing, pens or straws
✨ Enjoy strong flavours
✨ Stomp, bang, make noise or hum
✨ Touch everything within reach
✨ Gravitate to bright lights or close-up screens

Seekers aren’t being β€œnaughty” or β€œoveractive”, they’re trying to meet a sensory need. There are lots of proactive strategies that can be incorporated within schools to support this profile to meet their sensory needs to support their performance in other areas such as learning and play!

Tomorrow is the final post of the series πŸ’›

🌟 Sensory Avoider (Child)🌟

Day 3 of our series explores the Sensory Avoider – Child Style πŸ’™

Children who avoid sensory input often have a hyperresponsive sensory profile, meaning their brains detect sensations more quickly and more intensely.

You might see that they:

✨ Dislike strong smells or noisy dining halls
✨ Prefer quiet spaces and may cover their ears
✨ Avoid climbing or fast movement
✨ Don’t enjoy unexpected touch or messy play
✨ Are sensitive to clothing labels, textures or bright lights
✨ Prefer predictable routines

This isn’t β€œbeing dramatic” or β€œfussy”.

A hyperresponsive system (over responsive) means their world simply feels louder, brighter or busier than it does for others and they may need some support to manage this.

Welcome to day 2 of our sensory profiles series! Today we’re looking at the Sensory Seeker – Grown Up Style πŸ’œ

Sensory seekers often have a hyporesponsive (Under responsive) sensory system, meaning their brain needs more input to feel regulated and alert!

You might notice that you (or someone you know):

✨ Prefer to move rather than sit still
✨ Shake a leg, tap, hum or fidget
✨ Enjoy strong flavours or spicy foods
✨ Always have music or background noise on
✨ Choose high-energy hobbies like running, boxing or weightlifting
✨ Chew gum or bite straws

Seeking isn’t β€œrestless” or β€œdistracting”, it’s a form of self-regulation.

More coming tomorrow πŸ’›

Sensory processing isn’t just something we think about in childhood, adults also have sensory preferences shaped by how their nervous system takes in and responds to the world.

This week I’m sharing a short series exploring differences sensory profiles in both adults and children.

These aren’t β€œgood” or β€œbad” traits β€” just part of how our brains work.

Today’s focus is the Sensory Avoider – Grown Up Style πŸ’—

A sensory avoider often has a hyperresponsive (over responsive) sensory system, meaning the brain notices sensory input more intensely and can easily become overwhelmed.

You might relate if you:

πŸ‘‰ Prefer quieter, calmer spaces
πŸ‘‰ Don’t enjoy unexpected touch
πŸ‘‰ Are bothered by loud or repetitive noise
πŸ‘‰ Stick to certain textures or foods
πŸ‘‰ Like predictability, routine and control

Understanding these patterns can reduce overwhelm and support daily wellbeing.

The sight of children wearing ear defenders is NOT 'insane'!! Far from it! Here is an evidence snapshot!

Sensory Processing, Neurodiversity & Participation: What the research says

πŸ“š Studies consistently show that:

βœ…οΈ Sensory processing differences do impact how children learn and take part

βœ…οΈ Noise sensitivity is one of the biggest barriers to classroom engagement

βœ…οΈ Simple adaptations ⭐like ear defenders ⭐ help children stay regulated, focused and in the classroom

This isn’t β€œinsane”. It’s evidence-based inclusion.

For many children, classroom noise isn’t just β€œa bit loud”, it’s overwhelming.

Ear defenders reduce sensory stress so they can focus, feel safe and participate. Meeting diverse needs isn’t insane, it’s good education!

Happy Children in Need Day πŸ’›

Today we’re celebrating the incredible work that Children in Need makes possible. The projects they fund truly change lives, and we’re proud to have made our donation and to stand behind the brilliant individuals and services they support.

But... as therapists working across schools, homes and communities, we also see the wider picture: so many children with additional needs rely on charitable funding to access support, equipment, leisure opportunities and respite that play a vital role in everyday life. Statutory teams work tirelessly; the issue is a system stretched far beyond its limits.

Whilst Children in Need shines a light on children’s stories, our wish is that one day the essential services these children rely on are consistently and sustainably funded, without families having to share private challenges or depend on charity for what should be core provision.

Today, though, we celebrate the generosity, the community spirit, and the difference that will be made because people come together. And as always, we’ll keep advocating and supporting families!

πŸ’› Every child deserves the opportunity to thrive. Not just today, but every day ☺️
