Did you know about the Leicestershire legend of Black Annis?

People once said a blue-faced hag lived in the Dane Hills on the edge of Leicester. Her name was Black Annis. She made her home in a sandstone cave beneath an old oak tree, carved out with her own claws. From there she watched the fields, waiting for children or lambs who strayed too far.

Parents would warn their children not to stay out after dark, or Black Annis would catch them. Her story frightened generations into coming home before nightfall.

Villagers built their cottages with small windows so she couldn’t reach inside, and they hung rowan or herbs by the door to keep her away.

Old records from the 1700s call the spot Black Anny’s Bower Close. The cave was real once, though it’s gone now beneath the housing estate. Some said tunnels led from her cave to Leicester Castle, where she slept through the day.

Others believed she was something older, a spirit of winter and darkness, stirring when the light fades and the land turns cold.

Even now, her story lingers a whisper of the old fears that once kept people close to the fire on long, dark nights.

Samhain Blessings✨✨

The turning of the year begins tonight.🪶

The final harvest is gathered, the days shorten, and the veil between worlds grows thin.

Samhain marks the old Celtic new year — a time to honour ancestors, tend the hearth, and give thanks for what the land has offered.

Traditionally, herbs like mugwort, rosemary, and sage were burned to cleanse the home and guide spirits safely on their way.

Candles were lit to welcome loved ones who had passed, and food was shared in quiet remembrance.

Blessed Samhain.

Me and hubby went to a fascinating talk tonight at the House about Leicestershire’s witch trials.

Did you know Leicester once saw women hanged for witchcraft?

We learnt that in 1616, nine women from Husbands Bosworth were executed after a young boy claimed they’d bewitched him.
In 1619, Joan Flower and her daughters Margaret and Philippa were accused of witchcraft while working at Belvoir Castle. They were imprisoned in Lincoln, where Joan died and her daughters were hanged.
Even Queen Elizabeth Woodville was accused of using love potions to win King Edward IV’s heart.

The 1620s House still holds witch marks carved into its beams — protection symbols against evil spirits. There’s a tour tomorrow exploring them, which sounds fascinating gutted to miss.

Hard to imagine a time when fear and superstition ruled so strongly, especially over women’s lives. Remembering these stories keeps their voices heard and reminds us how easily fear turns very cruel.
