We recently saw a post about a Changing Places facility that had been left to fall into disrepair.

For disabled people, their families, and carers, this isn’t a minor inconvenience. These facilities are often the difference between being able to go out... or having to go home.

Regular maintenance of both the space and the equipment is essential. Hoists, changing benches, alarms, and rails need to be inspected, serviced, and kept in safe working order at all times. A poorly maintained facility can be unusable and unsafe.

But awareness matters just as much as maintenance, and staff should know:
👉 What a Changing Places toilet is
👉 Why their venue has one
👉 How users can access it
👉 Why it’s so important for families who rely on it

When facilities are locked, out of order, or poorly understood by staff, the impact is felt immediately by the people who need them most.

Designing and installing a Changing Places toilet is an important first step. Keeping it usable, safe, and respected is what makes it truly valuable.

Schools, colleges, and universities planning for the September intake should already be thinking about accessibility needs now...

If new students joining in September may require additional support with moving and handling, toileting, hygiene, or access, this is the right time to review what may need to change.

That might include ceiling hoist systems, hygiene room adaptations, changing and showering facilities, specialist bathroom equipment, or other accessibility adjustments across the school environment.

These projects often need assessment, layout planning, product selection, and installation, so starting early gives schools more time to make informed decisions and avoid rushed changes over the summer.

Multicare supports both mainstream and SEND education settings with practical advice, design input, specialist equipment, and installation.

If September access needs are already on your radar, now is a good time to start the conversation.

Six months after installation, the real test is if the space still works as well in daily use as it did on day one.

In care, education, and healthcare environments, specialist equipment quickly becomes part of everyday routine. It needs to work reliably, safely, and without added stress for the people using it.

So, what happens after handover matters just as much as the installation itself!

Regular servicing, LOLER inspections, and responsive maintenance help keep systems performing as intended, reduce avoidable disruption, and give teams confidence that the equipment they rely on is safe and ready to use.

Long-term value is about how well equipment continues to support people six months, twelve months, and years down the line.

Accessible hygiene rooms are a crucial component in making education accessible to all.
As schools strive to create inclusive environments, the Department for Education (DfE) plays a crucial role in guiding the design and construction of school facilities.

When faced with the challenge of accommodating disabled students, many schools, colleges, and universities discover that they have a very real lack of resources, equipment, and support available.

Our handy guide 'Making Education Accessible to All' is designed to give places of education all the information needed to make appropriate provisions to welcome disabled students.

"How do I know which sling loop to use?"

When it comes to hoisting, clarity matters, which is where Slingdicator® sling tags come into play.

The simple, colour-coded sling tagging system that helps carers hoist safely and confidently every time.

Why carer givers love them:

✅ They are brightly coloured, eye-catching, and easy to read

✅ The soft satin material is gentle on the skin and doesn’t affect sling integrity

✅ Tags are washable and durable

✅ Once in place, they are secure and can’t be moved from sling to sling without being cut off

✅ Slingdicators are compatible with most loop slings

Each Slingdicator set includes shoulder and leg tags in a choice of colours:

🔴 Red 🟢 Green 🔵 Blue ⚫ Black ⚪ White 🟠 Orange 🟡 Yellow

These small but mighty slig tags attach in seconds, stay in place, and make every lift safer, clearer, and more consistent for carers and service users alike.

The September intake might feel many months away, but accessibility planning for new students in any place of education needs to begin earlier in the year.

When schools welcome pupils with mobility or complex care needs, the environment may need certain adjustments to support safe care, dignity, and inclusive learning.

Starting the planning for this early gives teams more time to assess spaces, consider layout changes, and install any specific equipment before the new academic year begins.

If your school or local authority is reviewing accessibility ahead of the next intake, this short guide highlights some of the key areas to consider.

Good news for organisations across Scotland looking to improve accessibility...

Following recent confirmation that the Changing Places UK Toilets Scotland Fund will now be extended until 2029, with further investment from the Scottish Government, more venues will have the opportunity to install these vital facilities.

Changing Places toilets provide the space and specialist equipment needed for people with complex disabilities and their carers to use facilities safely, comfortably, and with dignity. Increasing the number of these facilities helps more people travel, visit venues, and take part in everyday activities.

We previously shared details about the fund and who can apply, which we’ve reshared below for anyone who may have missed it.

If your organisation in Scotland is considering installing a Changing Places facility and would like advice on layout, equipment specification, or compliance, our team is always happy to help.

Big News: £10 million Changing Places toilet funding applications are now open in Scotland!

The Scottish Government has launched a new round of funding to support the creation of Changing Places UK toilets across Scotland, and it’s a fantastic opportunity to make your venue or space more accessible and inclusive.

The Changing Places Toilets Scotland Fund is open to a range of applicants, including:

✅ Non-profit organisations
✅Small businesses
✅Community venues
✅Local authorities
✅Tourist attractions and leisure facilities

Note that the application deadline is Monday 20th October 2025 at 12pm

Of course, safe moving and handling relies on the equipment, but it also comes from knowledge, confidence, and the right training.

At Multicare, we provide practical Moving and Handling training designed around real care environments, helping teams understand best practice, reduce risk, and support safer, more dignified transfers.

Training from Multicare is delivered by Dave Robinson, our RoSPA-qualified Manual Handling Trainer, who has over 30 years’ experience working in healthcare and specialising in moving and handling best practice.

As one team he's worked with said:

“Dave, it’s always been a pleasure to meet you for assessments. You taught me so much, and you were the font of all Moving and Handling knowledge.” - Moving and Handling Team, Oldham

Bathrooms are one of the most personal spaces in any environment. And for people living with reduced mobility or complex care needs, thoughtful bathroom design can make a huge difference to independence, dignity, and day-to-day comfort.

Layout, equipment selection, and the way products are integrated into the space all influence how usable a bathroom feels over time. When these decisions are made carefully, the result is a space that supports both practical care and a more natural, home-like environment.

Our Lunch & Learn session – “Adapted Bathrooms: Combining Form & Function” explores how thoughtful design can balance usability, aesthetics, and long-term practicality.

During this CPD-style session we look at how teams can:

✅ Design layouts that support safe moving and handling
✅ Integrate specialist equipment without creating an institutional feel
✅ Support dignity and independence through good spatial planning
✅ Make decisions that continue to work well years after installation

This session is ideal for architects, housing teams, OTs, and consultants involved in designing and delivering bathroom adaptations.

05/03/2026

Having the right sling is essential for supporting comfort, dignity, and safety for the user, while also reducing physical strain for carers during everyday moving and handling tasks.

But what makes a sling is the 'right' sling?

Different situations require different designs. Some slings provide full body support for users with limited head or trunk control, while others are designed for specific tasks such as toileting or transfers where clothing needs to be removed easily.

Multicare’s N.hance® sling range has been developed to support a variety of clinical needs, including general transfers, toileting, and situations where a sling may need to remain in situ for short periods.

Every user is different, so choosing the right sling is about understanding the person, the environment, and how the equipment will be used day to day.

You can explore the full range of slings here: https://multicaremedical.co.uk/product-catalogue/patient-handling/
