Meet Louise: Leading the Way in Veterinary Pain Management

At Davies, ensuring every patient’s comfort is a true team effort—supported by Specialists like Louise, our Clinical Lead for Pain Management. Louise has over twenty years' experience as a European and Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons recognised Specialist in Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia. She gained an MSc (with Distinction) in the Clinical Management of Pain 10 years ago, as well as more recently being awarded the RCVS Fellowship for Meritorious Contribution to Clinical Practice.

What inspired Louise to specialise in this field?

“Anaesthesia is a technical and equipment driven Specialty, where physiology and pharmacological (medicines) knowledge is important when managing patients undergoing complex procedures. Patients who can also be anxious, worried and painful. We are here primarily to ensure they receive the best possible experience throughout their stay, however complex their medical and pain management needs".

🐾 Coya’s Comeback! 🐾

Meet Coya, a 1 year 9 month old Labrador Retriever who recently stole our hearts — and now she’s stealing the show at the beach! 🌊🐶

Back in July, Coya was admitted to Davies Veterinary Specialists after suddenly becoming unable to walk. She was diagnosed with idiopathic polyradiculoneuritis, a condition that causes severe neuromuscular weakness. At her worst, Coya was non-ambulatory and required intensive care and monitoring.

Thanks to the dedication of her owners, and the expert care from our team — including Anne — Coya began her journey to recovery. With time, patience, and physiotherapy, she regained strength and mobility.

Fast forward to today: Coya is running joyfully on the beach, full of life and energy! 🐕 Her owner shared a heart warming video of her progress, and we couldn’t be happier to see her thriving.

Her story is a testament to resilience, love, and expert veterinary care. 💙 We’re so grateful to be part of Coya’s journey.

🐾 Miracle Mia: From Paralysis to Playtime! 🐾

Meet Mia, the brave Leonberger puppy who defied the odds after being unable to walk at just 12 weeks old. Diagnosed with a rare neuromuscular disease, Mia spent weeks at Davies Veterinary Specialists, receiving expert care and bespoke physiotherapy.

Thanks to the dedication of her veterinary team and loving owners, Mia is now back on all fours—running, swimming, and living her best life! 💪🐶
Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance, compassion, and specialist veterinary care. 🧡

This joyful Labrador is living proof of how stem cell therapy can support dogs with lifelong joint conditions like elbow dysplasia.

🐾 Otis the Labrador: A Service Dog’s Journey Through Stem Cell Innovation

When lameness began to affect Otis’s mobility, his veterinary team at Davies Veterinary Specialists turned to a pioneering solution: autologous stem cell therapy.

The stem cells were processed by Cell Therapy Sciences Ltd who generously provided their expertise free of charge and attended Otis’s re-injection in person.

Six weeks after treatment, Otis was moving comfortably, off medication, and showing clear signs of improved joint function—an inspiring example of how regenerative medicine can support long-term management of lifelong conditions.

A huge thank you to all who attended our First Aid for Pet Owners session at the end of March.

The event raised a fantastic £293 for Vetlife, our charity of the year.

Pet owners were given tips on how to identify when something isn’t right with their pet and how to act in an emergency situation before getting to the vet. The morning also provided information on first aid principles, wounds and bandaging, common first aid problems and the collapsed animal. The session concluded with the opportunity to practice bandaging and CPR on animal models.

We are planning another event for later this year, so watch this space…
