👁️ When Should You Seek Urgent Eye Care?

Not every eye worry needs A&E — and that’s where MECS (Minor Eye Conditions Service) can really help.
MECS offers fast, expert assessments for a wide range of sudden eye problems, often without needing a GP referral.

MECS can help with:

• Red or painful eyes
• Sudden changes in vision
• Flashes or floaters
• Something stuck in the eye
• Light sensitivity
• Unusual discharge or watering
• Swollen or stuck-together eyelids

How to access MECS:

• Simply search online for “MECS near me” to find a local practice offering urgent eye care.
• You’ll be seen by an optometrist trained in emergency assessment and treatment.
• If you’re unsure what to do, you can also call NHS 111 for advice and guidance.

When to go straight to A&E:

• Loss of vision in one or both eyes
• Serious injury or trauma to the eye
• Chemicals in the eye
• Sudden, severe eye pain with sickness

If something doesn’t feel right, don’t wait — MECS and NHS 111 are there to help you get the right care quickly and safely.

Do Your Eyes Feel Like This? Signs of Dry Eye 👀

Dry eye can creep in slowly, and many people don’t realise their symptoms are connected.
Here are some of the most common signs:

• Gritty, scratchy or sandy feeling
• Watery eyes (yes — watering can be a sign of dryness!)
• Burning or stinging
• Blurry or fluctuating vision
• Soreness around the lids
• Eyes that feel tired quickly
• Discomfort with contact lenses
• Struggling with screens or air-conditioned rooms
• Light sensitivity

If any of these sound familiar, you’re definitely not alone — and dry eye is usually very manageable with the right plan.

Our Dry Eye Open Day on 28th January with Positive Impact is the perfect chance to learn what’s causing your symptoms and what can help.
