For years, I couldn’t tell when my son was getting sick or feeling unwell and he wouldn’t let me comfort him. I felt like a failure as a mum.
In my latest YouTube video (link in comments) I share my story, how I have come to understand when my son is ill and how to help him cope with those feelings. (Note: this is not medical advice, purely our journey).
Alfie didn't speak until he was around 4 years old so we had to learn the subtle signs that he gave us to show when he was feeling ill.
Even when he found some words he couldn't process how he felt and couldn't communicate his symptoms to us if he felt unwell. By the time he felt sick - he literally was.
As a parent it is so tough to see your child suffering and not know whats hurting or how to help.
But once I stopped looking for the normal words & actions of a sick child, and started to look at Alfie's behaviour, I began to notice the tiny signs his body showed when he wasn't feeling great or was coming down with something.
It really helped me learn the signs of illness with Alfie and enabled me to take back control as his mum and comfort him.
