In private Hand Therapy practice within the UK and Northern Ireland, trauma of this severity is not generally encountered at such an acute stage.

Following a severe crush injury, my independent specialist expertise was sought early at 4 weeks post-surgery. With healing wounds and K-wires in situ during the first appointment, the objective was clear.

Results to date are remarkable. However, this is only the first stage of recovery and restoring function.

In complex Hand Trauma, the Hand Therapist’s role often develops from clinician to advocate.

Privileged to be welcomed in delivering an advanced learning day at Hamad Medical Corporation’s Hand Therapy Department. This group of highly experienced Occupational Therapists were in attendance from around the world, including 10 Hand Therapy Certification Commission Certified Hand Therapists. These clinicians are tasked with treating complex cases, including causalities of war. Evidently an extremely dynamic and innovative Hand Therapy Unit leading the way on the global stage.

Excited to share a study published recently in Injury - exploring a modern approach to hand extensor tendon repairs using the WALANT (Wide Awake Local Anaesthetic No Tourniquet) technique in Northern Ireland. It investigates functional outcomes, complications and patient-reported results in an outpatient setting.
