🧠 Psoriasis Awareness Day
Psoriasis affects around 2–4% of the global population, yet it’s often misunderstood as “just a skin condition.” In reality, it’s a chronic autoimmune disease that can affect the body far beyond the surface.
🩺 What’s Happening Beneath the Skin?
Psoriasis occurs when the immune system overreacts, speeding up the production of skin cells. Instead of shedding naturally, these cells pile up, forming thick, scaly patches that can be painful and emotionally distressing.
🧏♀️ Common Symptoms Include:
• ✨ Red, brown, or purple patches of skin
• ✨ Thick, raised plaques covered in silvery scales
• ✨ Itching, burning, or stinging sensations
• ✨ Pustules or blisters
• ✨ Cracked, dry skin that may bleed
• ✨ Nail changes (pitting, discolouration, crumbling)
• ✨ Flaking or shedding of dead skin
🦴 Beyond the Skin
Psoriasis is systemic, meaning it can affect other organs and tissues. Up to 30% of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis, a painful condition that causes joint swelling, stiffness, and long-term damage if untreated.
🧠 Mental Health Matters
The visible nature of psoriasis can lead to low self-esteem, anxiety, and depression. Many people report feeling isolated or judged due to the appearance of their skin — a reminder of why awareness and empathy are so important.
💡 Let’s Change the Conversation
Psoriasis isn’t contagious. It’s not caused by poor hygiene. And it’s not just cosmetic.
It’s time to educate, support, and advocate for those living with this complex condition.
