One of the biggest worries runners have about seeing a physio is this:

“They’ll tell me to stop running.”

In reality, most runners we see during marathon training don’t need to stop running at all.

They usually just need:

• small adjustments to training load
• help settling irritation early
• strength work in the right areas

Waiting until pain is severe is what usually stops training.

We’ve written about the most common running niggles we see during marathon training.

As we get older, many people assume the key to staying mobile is stretching more.

But stiffness is rarely just a flexibility issue.

More often it’s a strength issue.

When muscles become weaker, everyday things can start to feel harder:

Getting up from chairs
Walking longer distances
Climbing stairs
Maintaining balance

That’s why our physio-led Pilates classes in Horley focus on building strength safely.

We explain why strength becomes more important than stretching as we age in our latest article.

Classes take place at our Pilates studio at The Stables on Meath Green Lane in Horley.

Many families tell us the same thing when they contact us about a parent.

“We didn’t realise how much things had changed.”

Mobility changes often happen gradually.

Walking becomes slightly slower.
Confidence outside the house reduces.
Getting out of chairs becomes harder.

Because the change is slow, it can be easy to overlook.

Our Physio at Home Team supports families across Horley, Reigate and surrounding Surrey areas, helping people stay independent and confident in their own homes.

We’ve written a short guide about when families often decide to arrange physiotherapy support for a parent.

🏃 Myth: “Pain is just part of marathon training.”

Tired legs and stiffness are normal.

Pain that worsens during or after running isn’t.

Most marathon injuries we see started as small niggles runners hoped would settle on their own.

Addressing them early usually keeps runners moving rather than needing weeks off later.

🏃 Myth: “More miles always makes me fitter.”

Mileage builds fitness — but only if your body can recover from it.

Sudden mileage jumps are one of the biggest causes of marathon training injuries we see.

If increasing mileage is starting to cause persistent aches or soreness, sorting things early usually prevents unwanted time off later.

If you’d like reassurance or want something checked so training can continue smoothly, our physio team is happy to help.

The reality of falls risk

Many people do not realise how common falls become with age.

In England, around 1 in 3 adults over 65 fall each year, and by the age of 80 it becomes closer to 1 in 2.

Falls are not just about injury. They often lead to reduced confidence, less activity and a gradual loss of independence.

The encouraging news is that many falls are preventable.

Health guidance in the UK recommends that older adults, particularly those at risk of falling, should complete strength and balance exercise at least twice per week.

At SB Physiotherapy in Horley, Surrey, our Physio Led Chair Pilates sessions are designed to help improve:

• leg strength
• balance and coordination
• confidence when moving and walking

The exercises are supported by a chair, making them safe and accessible for people who may not feel comfortable getting down onto the floor.

We currently have two spaces available in the class.

🏃 Myth: “I have to follow my training plan exactly.”

Training plans don’t know how you slept, how stressful work was this week, or how your legs feel after a tough session.

Good training adapts to real life.

Sometimes reducing or swapping a session keeps runners healthy enough to keep training next week — which matters more.

Listening early usually prevents small issues becoming forced breaks later on.

We had such a lovely afternoon yesterday visiting the residents at Signature at Banstead.

Celia and Arek from our Community Physiotherapy Team were invited to carry out mini balance and strength checks, and it was fantastic to meet so many residents and chat about staying active and mobile.

Thank you so much to the team at Signature at Banstead for welcoming us.

Checking balance and strength regularly is really important, as small changes can sometimes go unnoticed. Spotting these early means we can offer advice and simple exercise exercises that help people stay strong, steadier and more confident in their day-to-day activities.

We hope everyone who took part found it useful and that we’ve helped a few residents start their journey towards feeling stronger.

If you run a Care Home, retirement Community, or local group and would like our Community Physiotherapy Team to visit for a similar session we would love to hear from you. Please do get in touch at info@sbphysiotherapy.co.uk

🏃 Myth: “If I walk during a run, it doesn’t count.”

Walk breaks actually help many runners train more consistently and reduce fatigue, especially on longer runs.

Many experienced runners use run–walk strategies to manage load and recover better between sessions.

Forward progress matters more than nonstop running.

If fatigue or little niggles are creeping in, small adjustments early usually keep training comfortable.

🏃 Myth: “If I miss a run, my training is ruined.”

One missed run won’t undo months of training.

What does cause problems is trying to cram missed mileage back in later. That’s when overload injuries appear.

Consistency over time matters far more than hitting every single session.

If something is forcing you to miss runs, it’s often a sign your body needs a small adjustment rather than more pressure.

🏃 5 Things Marathon Runners Told Me Last Year That Made My Brain Hurt

Every marathon season we hear the same worries from runners, and many of them actually increase the risk of injury or training stress.

Over the next few weeks we’ll tackle the most common myths we hear in clinic, and explain what actually helps runners get to the start line healthy and confident.

Marathon training shouldn’t mean constant pain or worrying you’re getting it wrong.

If this is your first marathon, or your first in a while, this series is for you.

We’re excited to be returning to Signature at Banstead on 4th March for a special Wellness Suite event! 💙

Our community physiotherapy team, led by Celia (Community Team Lead) and Arek (Senior Community Physiotherapist), will be offering Mobility and Balance Checks for residents and visitors.

Each check will include:
🗣️ A brief mobility conversation
⚖️ A simple balance assessment
💪 Sit-to-stand or seated leg strength check
🚶‍♂️ Walking and walking aid review where relevant
📝 Practical advice to support confidence and safe mobility

These checks give attendees a practical insight into how physiotherapy can support strength, balance, and independence, and are part of our wider Physio at Home Community Service, helping residents stay active and confident both in care homes and at home.

We can’t wait to support this event, help residents and families engage with safe mobility practices, and show how the Wellness Suite and physiotherapy services work together to promote wellbeing.
