Valentine’s may be a day to celebrate if you’re in a happy relationship, or if you’re not dealing with loss, sorrow or heartache. But that’s not the case for all.

If that resonates, do something nice for yourself today🤍🫶🏼

Putting this here for anyone put off my the prospect of acupuncture needles. I used to HATE needles, but I’ve since learned that although the world is a scary place, acupuncture needles can help make it feel a bit easier on the soul, so now I think nothing of sticking them in myself.

If you’d like to try but don’t want to commit to a treatment because you’re nervous or apprehensive, I’d so happy to talk you through it and even apply one tiny needle - only if you feel comfortable in me doing so.

Feel free to DM me or the link to book a free face to face appointment is in my bio ✨

More than one coffee and my anxiety sets in…Yin Tang (between your eyebrows) is my favourite point for calming the system.

In Chinese Medicine it’s an important point as it settles the Shen (Shen being spirit) so it’s useful for anxiety, insomnia, restlessness - just anything that needs easing off really.

From a western point of view, its location aligns with the pituitary gland so stimulating the point taps into both your HPO and HPA axis.

HPO axis (hypothalamus - pituitary - ovarian) is the feedback loop that kicks off and regulates your menstrual cycle.

HPA (hypothalamus - pituitary - adrenal) axis is the loop that manages cortisol and in turn stress. When we’re stressed, the HPO axis can become inhibited which in turn can impact the HPA axis, which may then affect the menstrual cycle and in turn, fertility or hormonal conditions such as PCOS.

This is where acupuncture becomes really valuable as it can help regulate and support both the HPO and HPA by bringing the nervous system back into balance ✨🤸

Just me, rambling to camera about a few things I treat and how much I love acupuncture.

Some real talk… I hate feeling I have to ‘show up’ on social media to build my business, I feel like a total idiot half the time. Putting myself out there with something that is so important to me feels uncomfortable but hopefully my love for what I do at Yin Space comes through a little bit here. Acupuncture can be life changing so if it encourages just one person to try it, wherever they choose to do so, then that makes me happy 🤍🫶🏼

The answer? It all depends what you’re having it for.

I struggle to answer this because it’s not a one size fits all approach. Chinese medicine is amazing because it treats every person based on exactly what’s happening with their body. Migraines for one person, will be treated differently to migraines for another.

What doesn’t change however is that acupuncture is cumulative, so it builds on itself. While you might feel better after one session, you ideally need to commit to regular treatment to get the most from it as the effects compound over time. In saying that, I ALWAYS want to get you to where you want to be as quickly as possible - if you’re still coming in years later for the same original issue, I’m not doing my job, and that doesn’t feel good to me.

So… as a general rule of thumb I advise starting with once a week for acute conditions, every other week for chronic and at least every other week (although weekly is ideal here) for at least 3 months for fertility patients. I’ll then start spacing treatments as quickly as possible to get you into a maintenance phase. This can look like coming in every month initially, followed by every few months, every six months or just when/if you feel that you need it.

I understand that money and time are big factors, so I’ll always do my best to make sure patients can get the best care possible, within the parameters available to them 🤍

Just a few of the conditions that I love to treat ☯️

If you’ve been thinking of trying acupuncture, here’s a little sign to give it a go. I offer free 15 minute consultations (booking link in bio✨) or I’m always happy to recommend other practitioners if you’re not local to Yin Space or are looking for support with something that’s outside of my specialism 🤍

I forget to take my supplements, I skip the gym allll the time, my sleep is pretty atrocious, and yes, I had a glass of wine tonight (even though it’s Monday, gasp!).
What I’m trying to say is this: I’m here to help you feel better, not make you feel worse about just being human.
I’ll always talk you through the ways acupuncture can support your health and the choices you’re making, but I’m never here to judge them.

As long as it’s not harming anyone else, and it’s not getting in the way of what you’re trying to achieve (whether that’s supporting fertility, balancing hormones or reducing inflammation), real life isn’t having a perfect pedicure and never showing any emotion. Please come as you, hairy legs n all 🫶🏼

Fertility can feel really overwhelming to navigate, but a good starting point is almost always getting some blood tests done. Until you have done this, you do not have a clear picture of how your hormones are interacting, and skipping this step can lead to wasted time, unnecessary costs, and added emotional stress.

Test 1: Day 3 blood tests
These typically include FSH, LH, oestradiol (E2), prolactin, SHBG, testosterone, and TSH. Some people may also need additional markers tested, such as thyroid antibodies, depending on their history and symptoms.

Test 2: Progesterone blood test (often referred to as “day 21”)
This test helps confirm whether ovulation has occurred. It is important to remember that day 21 assumes a 28 day cycle. If your cycle is shorter or longer, the test should be done around 7 days after predicted ovulation, rather than automatically on day 21.

Male testing is also really important, particularly for different s*x couples. A semen analysis is less invasive for a man than blood testing is for a woman, and male factor fertility contributes equally to the overall fertility picture. For that reason, a semen test is often one of the simplest and most logical places to start when beginning to rule things out.

You can put a request through your GP or pay for private testing if you have any issues in doing. I can help to recommend where to go for these.

While I truly believe in fair division of labour, anything to do with assembling flat packs, drilling holes or anything DIY related I’m out. I tried and failed with this one - luckily I have a very handy husband. Although not so handy children…

We now have infrared red light at Yin Space from this week ✨ It has loads of benefits but it essentially improves cellular energy which in turn helps with circulation and inflammation. This then benefits your hormones so cycle regulation, fertility support, pain relief etc. If you’re in with me this week, you may even get a double whammy of infrared heat lamp and infrared light 🧖🏼‍♀️

After 13 years working in PR & comms securing coverage for other brands, it’s pretty cool for me to be in speaking about the pros and cons of cold plunging for women.

Wellness trends will tell you it’s beneficial to immerse yourself in cold water. Chinese medicine will tell you that cold water plunges (and cold water in general, including iced drinks) can prove detrimental, especially for digestion and menstruation.

What’s key here is that what works for some, doesn’t work others. BUT before you start throwing yourself in the January sea in the name of health or stress relief, please inform yourself. Because of the constant nature of male hormones, vs the cyclical flow of female hormones, SO much more research is conducted on men’s bodies than women’s. Did you know you’re 17% more likely to die in a car crash than a man because of the safety testing on seatbelts? How wild is that.

For women, cold water can actually place stress on a potentially already stressed system, which lots - if not most - of my patients right now are exhibiting.

Also, it’s winter people. If you have to immerse yourself in water, do so in a warm bath!

Thank you , fellow dog mom with a love for books about wronged women in history and raging about the state of female health care, you are a BABE 💗
